CANTON, Ohio -- An Ohio school board is expanding sex education following the revelation that 13 percent of one high school's female students were pregnant last year.

There were 490 female students at Timken High School in 2005, and 65 were pregnant, WEWS-TV in Cleveland reported.
And now for the real "DUH!" part:

Quote:
The Rev. David Morgan served on a committee that developed the lesson plans. He said the new curriculum moves beyond the "Just Say No" approach.

Health textbooks, older than some students, will be replaced.

"If we had math books from 1988, reading books from 1988, as a parent, I would be furious," said Patty Rafailedes, a physical education teacher.

The Ohio Department of Education doesn't require schools to provide sex education, particularly when it comes to using contraceptives.

I think that's great that they are finally expanding their sex education....but really, sex ed should start at home!!

My parents were the kind that just left that info up to the schools to teach.. I know for a fact I would have benefited more from my own Mother teaching me about puberty and sex, than I did from the school.

Wanna hear my moms sex talk with me? "Don't get pregnant and if you do don't come home!" thats it, most parents are not teaching sex ed at home beyond "just say no". Thats why the schools are getting involved. I know I took sex ed in 8th grade and learned a lot. I'm all for sex ed at school because the kids are learning from each other and not the facts to help them have safer sex.

Oh you mean the old tried and true such as, you can't get pregnant your first time. Or how about if you jump up and down afterward you wont get pregnant.

Then of course there were the ones that were truly fearful they were pregnant because they kissed a boy!! I think that one was taught by the parents.

Dh teaches math at a high school and is also certified in biology. These kids have very little knowledge about sex or even how their bodies work. I can't tell you how many times he has come home and told me about substituting a biology lesson for his math lesson based on comments he has heard. It is bad all over.

now the new ones are "oral sex is just like kissing!"

I agree, it needs to start at home, but so many parents refuse to even speak the work sex let alone discuss it! So schools need to step up and provide more than a "just say no" approach.

Just wait and abstinence only programs DO NOT WORK! I have a co-worker that recently had the sex talk with her 12 yo dd:
Mom: sex is something married people do.
dd: what if you are not married but really like the boy?
Mom: you hold hands
dd: so when can i get married?

I am not joking. SHe was laughing about it but that is the jist of the actual conversation. I had several classmates in highschool that got married at 18, they were virgins when they got married, yippeee, and divorced within three years, yippeee
