I've been using the Simple Green/Washing Soda (1 tbsp., 1/4 cup) combo for my diapers for 6 months. Our stash is 95% prefolds/pul covers, but I have recently added a few AI2s w/hemp soakers for out and about. Up until this point, I haven't had any trouble with stink and my diapers smell like nothing (which is good) when they are clean. Lately, I've noticed a very fowl smell (that is worse with the morning diaper but is present with every one) when my dd is wet. She has also just started solids, so I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not. Her room smells terribly before the diapers get washed! What could be causing this? Do I have build-up? I occasionally run a second hot rinse but haven't seen any bubbles to speak of--even in the first wash cycle. I don't know what to do except try to strip. I also bought some Purex F&C to try, but if it's build-up I'm going to have to strip first right? My other thought is that they aren't getting clean. If this were the case, wouldn't they smell bad when they came out of the washer? I'm so confused!

Any suggestions?

WE HATE WS.

We tried the combo..it SUCKS. (for us)

I realized it ws the WS.
Noew, we use just SG, and it is WONDERFUL
Beautifully clean dipes!
We use a tiny bit of sun detergent in with the poopy dipes pre-soak, to get poopy off, then drain poo water, then pile the rest of the load in. Put in the SG, wash, rinse, spin...voila!

I've been using the exact same SG/WS combo in the same amounts as you for 4 months (since birth) with no problems at all. We have all pocket dipes. I may try the plain SG now since I am running out of WS and since we moved don't know where to buy it. No stink for us but no solids yet either. However...on occasion when DD seems to have a bit of stink in the used dipe (stinky pee or the dipe, I don't know which it is) I use Tide Free. This has only been maybe 3 or 4 times.

I had the same problem, but I used Tide. We didn't find a cure, but I searched. Here's what I found out.

Do you use diaper cream? The non-natural ones use fish oils that build up and smell fowl.

Do you have a front loader? You need to use less detergent.

Do you have hard water? Some minerals (and they are all different depending on where you live) have funny reactions with detergents, or vinegar, or even simple green or ws (maybe).

You will need to strip them. Boil them if they don't have plastic snaps. dry them in the sun. you can also scrub them with dish washing soap and rinse before you boil.

We had a really fowl smell. mostly after bm's. could fix it, but i really feel i'm the minority. everone else has seemed to remedy their problem. i'm sure you will too. HTH.
