Shannon, HELP! (other dog people, too) Nastiness warning...

Woke up at 5:30am, and found my little dude hacking up a small bit of foamy clearish stuff. Not a big deal, UNTIL, I looked in one of the bedrooms

There is poop, pee, and blood everywhere. I can't tell if he's vomiting blood, peeing blood, or pooping blood, but there's quite a bit all over the carpet. I'm guessing puking blood. The poop and obvious pee on the floor is pretty normal looking, and there is one pile of vomit that is red-ish, but if that was all there was, I'd just assume he had eaten something red, kwim? Then there's THIS (do NOT look if you are at all squeamish) . There are 3 separate spots of that, and he's not a big dog. He was chewing on sticks yesterday when we got home, so I'm worried that he may have some sort of GI bleeding.

This couldn't be dietary, could it...the new rice, meat, cott. cheese, carrot diet he's on???

Oh, geez, I'm going to have to see a vet, huh? It's Saturday, too, which means nobody locally is open.

Definitely call the vet. Right away. Even in a small town, there is usually one vet on call.
Small update...

He's eating and drinking, and so far keeping everything down okay. He's even barking at his dog friend next door and chewing on a toy. Pretty much normal behavior. He seems tired, but otherwise okay. He's acting ashamed of himself (he's very sensitive, and knows he's not supposed to "go" in the house), but so far, he seems okay. Maybe he had something stuck in his throat and managed to work it loose with all the "activity". I'm going to watch him closely and see if he has another "episode". His nose is cold and wet, and his eyes are shiny. He's nibbling on DS's toes right now. Maybe we're past whatever it was.

Are you trying to transition to one of the raw food diets? How is your dog behaving?

Jen
If I had to guess, I'd say that stuff on the floor is poop. When you say the other poop was normal looking--was it formed or loose? Is there anything like bits of wood in the vomit??
My guess is that it isn't the new diet unless he's somehow managed to get salmonella from the raw chicken.
The stuff on the floor (ok, this will be gross) can you smell it?? Bloody diarhea has a VERY distinct smell, whereas bloody vomit doesn't smell good but it's not nearly so foul.
Check all the vomit and poop for any bits of sticks.
How does he seem? Is he alert, responsive?? Does he seem hungry? Is he drinking? If it turns out the stuff on the floor is diarrhea and the answer to all my above questions is yes, you can get away with waiting and watching him for a few hours--if you're going to get nailed with an emergency visit fee anyway. You can give him some Mylanta (5cc) or some Gaviscon or other coating agent. Make sure he's drinking lots so he can flush whatever it is out of his system.
If he feels feverish (their body temp is warmer than ours, but if under his ears or his crotch feels hot he needs to go in right away.
I'll check back a bit later--have to get to the farmers market.

We recently switched to an all "people" food diet. He's always been given raw meats (about twice or so a week) since we've had him, but he's been on a 1/3 meat, 1/3 vegie, 1/3 rice diet for about a week now. This usually consists of hamburger meat, dear meat or raw chicken, cottage cheese, brown rice, and some chopped raw vegies.

He just peed and it's fine, and he squatted to poo, but got distracted by a fly and decided to chase it instead.
I'd say he's acting like a dog :LOL .

It's not a strong smell (smells like meat), I'm guessing vomit, too, now. Stools are softly formed, normal for him. There were some bits of wood in the more "solid" vomit.
Ok, just read your second post, You can wait--if the vet was open this morning I'd probably take him in just to avoid the emergency visit fee--but if you're gonna get nailed with that anyway--sit on him and watch him.
I would get some canned pumpkin into him too, it will just help move everything down and out but in a pretty gentle way.
My guess is he had a bit of stick stuck either in his gut that he puked or passed. The pumpkin will help soothe everything on the way down :LOL
the canned pumpkin suff works great - no spices - just plain..
hope he's doing better
I sure hope that your dog feels better soon. I hope that he is fine. That would scare the crap out of me.

(On a side note, I find it rather funny that you posted a picture of your dog's puke for us all to see. :LOL .....my dh was like WHAT is THAT!)

I hope that everything is fine!

Hey, the ice was broken for "odd" pictures back when someone posted their DS's scrotum print.

It was for reference, leave me alone. :LOL

Well, we spent the day at my mom's doing a garage sale, and he spent the whole day trying to "get it on" with her black lab. (she's 75lbs, he's about 25...and neutered :LOL) I'm a little worried, still. He's not real interrested in food, and he's still vomiting when he does eat or drink. So far, his nose is still cold and wet, and he isn't showing any signs of dehydration or lethargy. I'm just not real sure what to think or do at this point. I mean, he acts like he feels fine, but the not eating/vomiting thing is worrying me. There's no more blood, btw, just clearish and containing bits of whatever he may eat. I'm hoping we can at least make it until Monday, and I'll drive the 30 miles to the only decent vet in our area.

What should I be watching for as far as turning this into an ER situation? Should I be offering food, or let his tummy rest?

Why did this have to happen when DH is out of work and we have NO money?

Here's some pics of Bear in action...just wanted to share.

Little Dude
I have a dog that has a a very sensitive stomach. Every vet I've ever been to says not to feed him anything for at least 12 hours after he vomits, and preferably 24.
Like Jamie said, since we know he will eat, rest his tummy for a minimum of 12 hours (and yes, preferably 24) When you feed again, just feed white rice (not brown) and maybe a bit of cottage cheese (but just a bit) Cooked meat only for this week. If you have some around, get him to drink some pedialyte.

As far as what to watch for--I know things are tight so yeah, if you can avoid a visit to a vet I know you want to. Watch for any signs of lethargy or him just not being himself. You can check his colour and cap refill by pressing down with a finger on his gums just above his upper canine tooth (the fang) the gum should go white but then refill to pink within a couple seconds. Give him only small amounts of water but frequently--so he's not gorging himself. You can also try a bit of broth and see how he takes to that--just small amounts--his tummy is sensitive so you want to avoid putting too much in there at one time.

Honestly--if money was not an issue, I'd say take him in, but since I know it is and I so know what that's like, I'd say just watch him carefully--maybe set an alarm tonight to let him out a couple times and check on him.

He's doing really well, now. Eating, drinking and eliminating normally. No more signs of any problem.

Thank you so much for all your help, Shannon. Others, too. I was really scared that I might lose him, and was even more scared that money would be a factor. I really appreciate all your advice and support.

Glad to hear he's back to normal!! Like I said though, only cooked meats this week and probably use some canned pumpkin, about 4 tbsp a day just to make sure any little stick bits that may be hiding get flushed out.
