Autumn is on the way (it's still in the 90s here, I'm willing the cooler weather to head to me). Anyhoo, what great fall books do you pull out this time of year? Any books about summer's end and fall's beginning? How about seasonal crafts and activities and outings? Please share! And thanks! --Nancy

Here's a website that has annotated links sites with lots of ideas related to fall holidays:

Fall Holiday Ideas

Here's a really lovely song my father taught me when I was little - he'd learned it in school when he was little:
Come Little Leaves - although the melody on this page is not the one he sang. I knew a Waldorf kindergarten teacher who always taught it to her class too...

WE do pretty boring stuff but here goes!

Apple picking and related coooking (applesauce, apple muffins, apple crisp)
Shrunken head (peeled, carved, dried apples)
leaf rubbings
Making scarecrows
trip to pumpkin patch
pumpkin snacks (muffins, pancakes, soup, seeds)
jack o'lanterns (we use all kinds of squash for these and older DD did a turnip last year)

books include (and yes my kids are 8-13 but they still want these books every year! At least the younger two do and the 13yo tolerates it
)

It's Pumpkin time
Apple Pie Tree
Fall themed Clifford Books

Lots of woods walks (too hot in the summer)

Collect leaves, acorns ect and put in a nature box the kids can explore when they feel like it

Make leaf men and women out of the leaves, basically taking a leaf, gluing it on paper, adding arms, legs, google eyes ect

Make pumpkin pie

go apple picking (warning kids can pick a great many apples in a very short amt of time!)

pumpkin painting, decorate with feathers, google eyes, chenille stems, ect

Making halloween costumes

We love to guess how many seeds are in a little pumpkin, then cut it open to count. We play with the insides for a whole afternoon, then separate the seeds to rinse and cook.
I like these books:
The Runaway Pumpkin by Kevin Lewis
Bats at the Beach by Brian Lies

Well thank goodness you started this thread! I've been thinking about doing it for a week now....but, obviously life got in the way

We're reading two books right now.....

It's Fall! by Linda Glaser, and

Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert

Both have great paper-cut illustrations, and It's Fall! has 3 pages of suggested activities in the back. Good stuff!

As for activities, we'll do the typical trip to the pumpkin patch stuff...oh, and we're waiting for our sunflowers to finish up, so we can watch the birds feast on the seeds...we may cut a few heads (sunflower heads, that is) off and tie them to trees closer to the house so we can watch from inside too.

As I think of other ideas, I'll be sure to post again.

Keep those book titles coming....

And, I had forgotten about Leaf man, love that book! We read it last year and did a craft to go along with it. We made our own leaf persons from various leaves we collected.

We also love these books recommended by Unschoolnma a few years ago.

we are painting watercolor shaped paper leaves.

also we will probably paint a new birdhouse for winter. (I know, weird idea for fall, but we live in an area that is like the birding mecca of the US, especially in the winter!)

we will do a moonstroll for the harvest moon

also go apple picking later this month and pumpkin patch in Oct. probably do a hayride. this is the first year DS and DD will get to TorT too.

otherwise
: for ideas! especially looking for more nature crafts!
