I am a first time mother.

I have been shedding massive amounts of hair about three to four weeks now.

During my second and third trimester, I think that I may have lost a strand or two.

Now I'm losing handfuls in the shower and there is hair everywhere! On the floor, in the drain, on me, on my baby, in his mouth, on his change table ... I could go on.

I know that this is normal, all part of the hormone balancing act following pregnancy ... but how much longer until it goes back to the normal shedding rate? I'm hoping that it will stop soon, like next week. I'm hoping that this doesn't take months to settle down (after all I didn't lose hair for nigh on nine months).

It is the amount of loss that is driving me nuts . I'm not worried about going bald, its not that. It is the mess on the floor and a few times I've had to pull hair away from DS mouth.

My hair loss calmed down when ds was around 4.5 to 5 months old. It can be very frustrating but there is an end to it! Hang in there

Ugh, I know what you mean!! Mine started when ds was 12 weeks old, and is still going 2 months later. I will say, at it's peak a couple weeks ago it was almost scary. I was like you though - not worried about going bald, more worried about hair EVERYwhere. Between me and the two dogs shedding, imagine the hair in my house!

It has slowed down a lot, and I have heard from other mamas I should be on the end of the hair loss streak.

I started noticing the hair loss a couple of months ago, when my DD was your DC's age. She is now 5 months old and hooray, the rate of hair loss seems to be slowing. I'm still losing more hair than usual, but the big huge gobs of hair EVERYWHERE are much more infrequent.

However it seems that this varies a lot from person to person. I've heard of the hair loss continuing for a long time, and my mother says she never had it at all (lucky her).

I shed from the time dd2 was about 3 months until about 6 months old... great huge gobs of hair that made me think I truly was going to go bald. I would dread washing my hair, certain I was going to come away with a big bald patch somewhere. I put my hair up in a ponytail to keep some of the mess contained. You get a little tired of ponytails after 3 months though.

I shed like that until dd was about 6 months old. Basically it was so bad that I cut my hair really really short after the first 2 months becaus I just could NOT stand it. It was gross after a while and it got really really annoying to constantly pull hair off everything. My poor dh wears black t-shirts with his uniform and I have red hair. Can you imagine????

I finally noticed a slow down to hair loss at about 5.5 - 6 months. I had so much hair fall out that I could have saved the government money and made all the rope the navy needed. (They still use rope, don't they?). Now, what hasn't fallen out, my DD is trying to pull out. My DH reassures me, however, that he married me for money not my hair.

I'm almost at 5 months pp, and it's still falling out. Started at 2 months and at 3 months is when it got a lot worse. I'm still waiting for it to get better.

Same here, 4.5 months pp and I'm still losing gobs of it. I have a ton of hair to begin with, so it's actually NICE to have it thinned out a bit, but I can not even BEGIN to tell you how tired I am of watching hair tumbleweeds blowing across my hardwood floor every day. I can pull my hair back with my hand and come away with a handful of hair every.single.time. I'm pulling it off of everything, and it's just driving me crazy. I have pretty long hair right now, but I'm honestly thinking of chopping it to chin length just to cut back on the piles of it I'm leaving everywhere. It's MADDENING!

edit: We were watching CSI last night, and they were at a crime scene where they found *a* hair, yes, singular, in the bed of this house...I said to Alex, "my god, can you imagine if they had to do that here?!? They'd spend MONTHS processing all the hair they'd find in here!!!" :LOL

DS is 5 mos and I am still losing a ton. If I forget to clean the tub when I am done, DH thinks a sizable rodent is drowning in there. And I now have TWO baldspots, one at each temple! I already have really fine, thin hair, so this is just depressing. If I wear it up, the baldspots show, if I wear it down, DS grabs it and gets it in his mouth. I feel so pretty!

Our daughter is 4 1/2 months and I am experiencing similar to what the pp's describe! I also have 2 very thin spots at my temples (this seems common!), but they seem to be filling in with tiny new hairs...so hopefully what has fallen out (in heaps!) is slowly growing back... I remember getting my hair trimmed when I was about 2 weeks post partum and the stylist commenting on how "thick and beautiful" my hair was...sheesh, if she could see me now!!

I'm glad to hear I'm not alone. I delivered 7/6/05 and I think my hair loss is at it's peak. I have a bald spot in the front hair line just before the temples. I was seriously about to slip into deep depression over this. I thought I had some sort of undiagnosed illness I have the hair dust bunnies too. Also my dh says he wakes up every morning and has to unwind one of my hairs from his penis :LOL I have hair that is middle of my back, just below bra strap. I had this during pg with previous child and after and it wasn't as bad. It has gotten worse with each child, and I was only 9 mths pp when I got pg again so I had the knew hair growth, but now its gone again. : I wish there was something to take to stop it. I can put my hair up in a clip now and I was never able to do that before.
