My 2 month old baby has a sheepskin rug which he loves. Spends basically all his playtime there. And it just occurred to me (as I watched him slobber all over it) that I have no idea if they put any unsafe chemicals on those things (like the fire retardants in carpet, etc..) Does anyone know?

I remember a discussion about this a long time ago and I seem to remember someone from New Zealand who actually worked with leather at one point in her life saying that the chemicals used in the tanning process from some manufacturers weren't very nice. I hope she sees this, maybe she'll chime in...

Where did you get it, perhaps that will help nail down if it might be yucky or not.

I've heard that the tanning chems aren't great, and I am a little concerned about pesticide residue (from dipping the sheep). But I'm hoping someone really knowledgeable posts! (My dd slept and played on one, so I'm wondering about it for the second child!)

I ended up getting a new one myself (was getting one for a baby shower, so I thought my son could have a new one too) - a Kaiser mimosa-tanned one from Germany. So now I don't have to worry about him spending half the day eating it.
