I keep hearing about this for blood loss - when do you take it and how do you use it - infusion, or just let it steep a little while? drink it during or after birth and how much?

i saw it used at a birth, after the baby was born when the woman was bleeding too much
it was amazing, she took it and the bleeding stopped like somebody had turned off the faucet
i do not know how it was prepared or the dosage but i'm sure you could research it
I've always used the tincture, but lately my apprentice learned in school that it can actually cause clotting.

The ideal after birth anti-hemorrhage tincture would be Cinnamon, evidently. I've been using that more and its' really nice!

This may be a stupid question, but what is a tincture? Also, is the cinnamon tincture something I can prepare myself? Do you give it to your clients only if they are bleeding heavily, or as a preventative measure?

My midwife (whom I love and feel comfy with) doesn't use herbs, but brings a shot of pitocin in case of hemmorage. I'd rather try cinnamon first, if necessary!

My midwives have me drinking a cup a day (steeped for 20 minutes) for the last 30 days of my pregnancy.

It tastes absolutely horrid, so what I do is make it up the night before with peppermint, throw it in the fridge and drink first thing in the AM. The peppermint and the cold make it much easier to stomach

tinctures are herbs that have been infused in alcohol. Then, the herbs are strained and the tincture is given via dropperfuls.

I only give the tincture when bleeding is heavier than I would like to see. You can get tinctures online or at your local health food store.

Crystal, you're drinking shepherds purse tea in the last month? I've never heard of using it before labor before. Is it to prevent hemorrhage? Do your midwives do this with all women?

Its their common practice with most women. They said it was to prevent hemorrhage and have had great success with it in the past. There was talk of encapsulating it, but alas, I got the tea lol
My midwife brews up one cup of it after birth from the herbs, which I drink. She does that with all women, and the herbs are all organic. Although I do agree....it tastes like a barn!!

YUCK!
My midwife has me taking a shepard's purse tincture as a preventative measure this last month. It's standard for all of her clients. I mix it in with my juice in the morning, doesn't change the taste in any noticable way.
My midwife used to use Shepherd's purse a lot. However, she found that it stopped bleeding SO well, that it formed really large clots in the uterus that caused some EXTRA bad cramping. So, she suggested NOT using Shepherd's purse. I don't know what we would have used instead. I took Alfalfa supplements the last 2 weeks of my pregnancy (4 tablets 3 times a day) to increase my iron and my Vitamin K...and we were going to focus on NOT BLEEDING!!! And guess what!! Those two things worked!
I did not bleed any substantial amount with this birth.

Well, I've been drinking alfalfa infusion as part of my regular pregnancy infusion for the last 2 trimesters, so perhaps I don't need to worry too much. Although 1st birth, I drank it, too, and lost a fair amount of blood, so I've got the Shepherd's Purse on hand, JIC.

Interesting about the blood clotting. My friend, the one who suggested the SP in the first place, ended up with a big infection due to clotting, and I don't think anybody ever suspected the SP.
Yes, my teaching midwife says the same thing about shepherd's purse and clots. I've never heard of anyone using it except postpartum..hmm...I'll have to ask about that.

Instead she uses HemHalt from TriLight Herbals. Two things are nice about it: it's a better mix of herbs that stop bleeding rather than causing clots, and second it's a glycerine base instead of the grain alcohol base, so it doesn't taste as bad or burn. You can get TriLight Herbals from www.inhishands.com.
