Hey there... I thought I'd post here and see if you wise women have any thoughts/ideas for me.

Some of you know that I recently started an initiative to raise funds for rural education in China. I bought a domain name (bamboovillage.org) and started an etsy shop (see my sig) under the assumption that this was the fastest way for me to start setting aside money. And it has been.... especially when I was offering free shipping. One question: do you think I should raise my prices a little and offer free shipping again? I lost way too much money when I did it before, but sales have slowed down so much, I'm thinking I might want to try it again.

I was fortunate to be gifted with a consultation with a grant writer, but honestly, I haven't been able to devote the time to research the questions I need to answer before I can start working with her.

Recently, I've started to consider the possibility of making this my career. If I live in China (which dh and I have been planning to do - that's where we met), the cost of living will be so much lower, and I could "stay home" to run Bamboo Village.

We've already chosen our first scholarship recipient - a young teen whose mom died and, as is typical in China, the dad wanted nothing to do with his children in favor of starting over. This girl is living with her elderly grandmother in a peasant village, and economics are playing a strong enough role to make them consider having her quit school and go to work in a sweat shop. I'm really excited that we can help her out so soon, although I really hadn't intended on starting to send money over until the fund grew a little.

Anyway, I'd love your thoughts. Have any of you done fund raising before? I work full time in marketing, but I certainly cannot afford to do print mailings and other traditional forms of marketing. I have thought of offering to do evening presentations at people's homes... I'm a pretty good public speaker, and am used to talking about China. I could combine something like that with a silent auction, or make it a dinner and charge per person...

I'd also love your feedback on my etsy shop. I'm afraid the focus is too diluted. A more robust explanation of the fund and why I'm doing it is in my etsy profile.

TIA!

Have you considered writing articles for online distribution? Starting a weblog to tell your story and get people interested in what you're doing? Have you written press releases and started getting to know local reporters?

Those are some good places to start getting the word out.

Hey mama, we should talk. I have recently started something like this (theprajnafoundation.org). I have been too busy and sickto put any work into it, but a professional website is going up soon. I have a ton of ideas, maybe we can work together. Do you have nonprofit staus yet or are you working under a fiscal sponsor?

I'd love to talk! :

Sleepless, I got as far as opening the shop on cafepress, but it stopped there. It wasn't as intuitive to me as Etsy, and all the image templates to download... it just overwhelmed me. I should get back to it.

Night Owl (I'm getting a theme here, of people who replied! ) Great suggestions. I did start a blog: http://bamboovillagepress.blogspot.com, but so far, my posts are periodic. It didn't help that I was just out of town for 4 days! I should give some thought to your other suggestions, thank you!

Keep the ideas coming! Thank you so much!
