I'm interested in checking out some shops for baby while I am in NYC in May.

Any suggestions?

I'm looking for independent shops as opposed to big chains.

Cloth nappies, wooden toys, organic clothes...

I'd be grateful for any ideas.

You did not say what part of town you will be visiting,
Sons + Daughters children's shop is in the East Village is lovely. This is a past client who opened this shop after she became a mom.
FYI, there are independent shops in every neighborhood so it's best to tell us where you want to go.

Sons + Daughters
65 Avenue A

Yoya Mart has all the things you mentioned, truly wonderful stuff. This is in the Meat Packing area.

YoyaMart
15 Gansevoort St, [at Hudson St]
(212) 242-5511

Both neighborhoods (East village and Meat Packing district ) are fun places to visit for a tourist who loves to shop! ;-)

Lulu's cuts and toys (5th Ave, Bergen St)
Area Kids (across the street from Lulu's, another one on 7th ave btw union/president

there are so many more...visit parkslopeparents.com for more ideas in and around park slope
