Yesterday I bought a gorgeous skein of yarn that's a silk/wool blend with variegated coloring. The colors softy blend into each other and it's comprised of muted earth tones. Beautiful stuff!! And not cheap, either.

So I was halfway through the skein and noticed that the yarn is not continuous and there is a section where one color (green) was knotted to another color (orange). It's like they ran out of yarn and just knotted it to a new skein. In the scarf I am making, this created a really abrupt color change. That, combined with the knot, makes me think that I should return the yarn.

I'm new to working with this kind of silk/wool variegated blend, so I don't know if this is typical. Anyone know? Should I return it?

TIA

it wouldnt happen to be the Patons SWS soy/wool yarn, would it?

I found that quiet often... i just cut the knot, and try and match up the yarn further down to keep the coloring a bit more consistent

That's a shame
Is it Noro? I'm working with Noro Iro right now, which is a wool/silk blend and I have encountered only 1 knot in the skein I've wound.
I would do as the pp said and cut out the knot and rejoin to where the color change should have been. Can you use the yarn you "skip" for anything in the project, like seaming or, as I'm doing, on fringe?

If you got it at a LYS, I'd call them up and ask if that is normal for that yarn. I would hope they'd be very helpful with suggestions or taking it back. I hope you can make it work!

My money is on Noro. I've never had that problem with Silk Garden, but in the 5 skeins of Kureyon I've used on Lizard Ridge so far, every single one has had a knot in a strange and obnoxious place: so I vote it's normal for that yarn.

eta: not acceptable, and if it's in a project where it's an issue then I'd complain about it. With LR, it doesn't matter so much.

I think this is pretty typical of a LOT of smaller run yarns.

I read somewhere that there was a disclaimer on a brand of yarns regarding this problem. If there wasn't more than 3 "knots" per skein/ball of yarn, it wasn't considered a "problem" and they wouldn't do anything about it.

That was Colinette, wasn't it? I think that's reasonable, because they have very short colour runs and the overall effect is a mottled one anyhow. The OP's yarn is a slow gradiant: not so cool.

Yup, it's Noro. And it's a very slow gradient, so reknotting it wouldn't work. The green abruptly turns to range, and then next time the green shows up is way down towards the very end of the skein. If I matched it up with the rest of the green, I'd invariably loose about 1/3-1/2 of the skein.

I think I'll give the store owner a call. Maybe she could exchange it.

Thanks for your help!

This is my first experience with Noro, glad to know what to do if this happens to me. When I finally got to the knot I remembered, it turned out it was only a foot or so into the skein, so not in the middle of a long color run like yours was.
