Should I see a urologist?

Hi everyone-
I have a 5 year old son who is entact, and doctors have found his penis a source of wonder it seems from the beginning. Well, all the docs say that he is supposed to be fully retractable by now but he is still connected on the bottom in the middle and has been for years now. He recently started to say that it hurts when he is trying to retract it, and I don't ever mess with it. The doctor that I saw today says I should see a urologist to see if he needs to be circed. I do not want my son to have to go through all that. Is there really any reason he should get circed? He still has plenty of time to be fully retractable right? Please educate me and ease my mind on this...maybe then I can educate the doctors. Thanks in advance.

I seem to remember reading something about the range of ages when full retraction occurs with puberty being on one end of the spectrum. Hope this is so and that you need not worry anymore.
It is my understanding that he has plenty of time to retract HIMSELF. Let him be. Get a second opinion with a intact-friendly doctor if needed. I wouldn't bother if it were me, just from what you have said that is my opinion. Some aren't retractible until their teens.
If he is doing it on his own then it could just be the natural seperation process. I have heard some are in pain during this process. I am sure more ppl will have some links for you. I am about to go out so I can't right now, but good luck! Go with your instincts they are usually right.

There is absolutely no reason to worry. Only 1/3 of 3 year olds are retractable and only 2/3 of 6 year olds which means that only about half of 5 year olds are retractile. Even at 10 years old, 10% are still not retractile nd this is absolutely normal. However, it does appear that your son is well on the way. Tell the doctors you are keeping your money and your son intact.

Even if there is an adhesion problem that is abnormal, the solution should be to remove the adhesions, not perform a circumcision.
There are creams to use, for instance. Circumcision just shouldn't be the first answer.

I am dealing with the wonderful world of military doctors...fortunatly I don't have to pay for medical care. I am currently seeking permission to get care in a civilian facility. I have had ok care in the past, but find that the older and smarter I get, the more uneducated the military doctors get. Thanks~

We are military too. I haven't needed the medical facilities thank goodness. I just wanted to add Good Luck! I know it must be difficult.

Hmmmmmm . . . . . Think there might be a reason they are military doctors instead of in the high dollar world of private practice?

I agree with Frank.Keep the money and intact/normal genitalia,AND find a better doctor. We have insurance(what a joke, but that's another post),but would not hesitate to pay cash for better medical care.
No need to circ a 5 year old.He sounds normal.
Best wishes protecting him.He is lucky to have a mom who is more informed than the *educated* doctors. So many boys your sons age get mutilated for this exact reason, and there was never anything wrong with them-just a variation of normal.

Don't think that a urologist will be any different. My DH saw a urologist a few years back who insisted that he must be circ'd - not only for "cleanliness" but to cure all other various ills; like a problem DH had with - hemrhoids! Give me a break!

Good luck finding a new doc.
What?! Get rid of that doctor. My 6 1/2 year old is like that and has been so for YEARS! Its not a big deal and he'll be completely retractable in time.

How could he be that stupid and get through medical school? How could he be so stupid as to think your DH was that stupid and get through medical school? Do these people get a lobotomy along with their cap and gown? I've heard medical school is so hard that it fries your brain but I didn't think they meant it literally! UHG!!!!

that is the exact reason I'm looking for a new doc...sometimes you get some really great docs that love to practice even for pennies...and the other ones I swear the only reason they are even still in the military is because they wouldn't be able to afford their malpractice insurance! Some of the mess ups are on the extreme side, and would hardly ever happen in the civilian world.
I dated a lady for a while whose SIL was a military doctor. She was so bad she was stumped for an answer when you said "Hi!" :LOL

I keep that artice Frank has stickied on my faves list and will use it to arm myself in cases like this, should it arise.
