Sick baby refuses to swallow!

Can anyone help with this?? My baby has had a bad cold including fever for about three days. His fever seems broken now but he is still very, very snotty. We noticed that he has started drooling to beat the band - and this little guy is a serious drooler as it is, so we're talking soaking the front of his shirt every 5-10 minutes or so - and our theory is that his throat is so sore, he doesn't want to swallow. It would make sense that now, on day 3, he would have some postnasal drip. He is refusing his beloved cheerios and Teddy Puffs, only wants to nurse for under a minute (and nursing is ALL he wanted to do yesterday!) and guzzling up water, only to let all of it fall right out of his mouth again.

Is there anything specific I can do to make him feel better? I sure don't want him to get dehydrated while we wait for it to simply pass.

TIA!!

Dear Melixxa,
In a similar situation a few months ago, on the advice of my mother-in-law, I nursed my baby by applying honey on my nips a few times a day. it worked. Honey is otherwise also good for common cold.
Please do try. Luck

Coming from a mom with a child who is always ill, it sounds to me like he really needs to be suctioned out (ie. bulb and saline). If he is not nursing for very long its cause he cant breath out his nose. Also the drooling and letting the water fall back out of his mouth is sign that his throat is very swollen and sore. Hows his breathing? Is he breathing fast? When he breaths do you notice his tummy sucking under his ribs when he breaths? Are his nostrils flaring when he breathes?
Thanks for your replies. My babe is a little better today (no sign of fever) but still drooling like it's the latest thing.

FTR, I would LOVE to suction this kid. But he would no sooner let me do that than sit still while I applied a full coat of makeup to his face. I can barely manage to wipe the snot off his face with his squirming, screaming in indignation, turning his head from side to side, blocking me with his arms, twisting with his body, etc. So he's still very congested. He did nurse in the night and this morning, with more frequent bouts of coming up for air.

Anyway, I haven't noticed the breathing problems. I assume that his throat is still very, very sore. Last night I managed to get him to take SOMETHING by mouth by offering him ice cubes to suck on. He liked that.

Uzra_Hashmi, I have not offered him honey yet because he is still under 1 year old and we're staying away from stuff like honey, dairy, wheat and the like until at least then. I know I always take it when I'm sick, though.
