Well, I don't even know where to start. I am 27 and I've been dealing with one health issue after another since I was 18. I've had a massive ovarian cyst removed, which was only found when I was rushed to the hospital with gall bladder disease induced pancreantitis. I had major surgery to remove cyst and gall bladder.

Since then I've dealt with severe depression and anxiety. I finally did scrip meds but they are killing my gut and I am at a loss as what to do next.
:

In January 2006, I went to the ER due to dehydration from the 'flu and blood tests showed an elevated platelet count of 1053 (normal is <400) and a TSH level of 53. Since then I've had thyroid nodules biopsied, a bone marrow biopsy, taken four different doses of Synthroid and continue to have the worst gut issues. I am pretty sure I have some type of IBS, as I cannot have a BM without use of laxatives anymore.
: Officially, I have hypothyroidism and essential thrombocytosis (I make too many platelets), but unofficially, I am falling apart from the constipation, headaches, body aches, and general malaise.

I just don't know what to do anymore. I feel like sobbing and then sobbing some more. I don't know where to start. I know that my food choices need to be better, but I don't know where to begin anymore. I know that, in the long run, the SSRI and benzo I take are making my constipation and gut issues worse, and I know I need to supplement but with what... generally, I feel educated on these matters, but I am feeling really lost now.

Any help or direction would be appreciated. I am at my wit's end, and I don't know how much longer I can do this.

I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this. I don't have any answers but I know the feeling of betrayl one can feel when your body is revolting against you.

I have but not as seriously as I have needed to. I have the weekend off and I am researching like mad, as this CANNOT continue.

Gut problems and nutritional deficiences can be a cause of all this.

If your gut is not working correctly, some key nutrients are not being absorbed: B vits, zinc, magnesium. These all have been shown in studies to influence depression.

Gale Force has some awesome advice in the Mental Health forum.

And read the Healing the Gut Tribe Cheat Sheet sticky at top of this forum. I've cured my IBS with diet and supplements. Your bowel function is a direct result of what you are eating, and also I was on intensive antibiotics which totally killed my digestive function. Also I had huge anxiety and insomnia when my gut was bad.

I definitly agree with the magnesium, vitamin B and zinc. Magnesium is the overlooked mineral. Everyone talks about calcium. Any perscribtion medication will deplete your body of magnesium. It has so many effects on the body you wouldn't believe. Try it and it should help you out alot.

Good luck

Selu,

I'm so sorry to hear you're feeling so bad.

Adding a high quality cod liver oil (Nordic Naturals or Carlson's) would be beneficial as well.

The herb Ashwagandha (ayurvedic herb) is really good for the fatigue/thyroid issues you describe.

If you can, go see someone for acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. I treat patients with similar symptoms with great success...we can even get rid of the side effects from those meds you're on and just that alone will make you feel so much better. There are also Chinese herbs that can help you with your platelet issue.

I know it seems like a long road ahead, but just take it one step at a time and know and believe that it will get better - because it will.

To find a licensed practitioner in your area, go to www.nccaom.org

I hope you're feeling better soon!

Thanks for reminding me! I totally forgot to mention this...

High doses of magnesium is the best contipation reliever ever that actually helps your body, improves your mood and contributes to your nutritional store.

selu, so sorry you're having so many problems. maybe the thyroid is causing the constipation? if you think it's IBS, i found this site doing research for my DHs IBS -- http://www.helpforibs.com/diet/trigger2.asp . it seems to be more on target for him than the Specific Carb diet. a lot of her trigger foods are trigger foods for him, too. hope you feel better, soon.

It's all individual, but in general, healing the gut is a lot of work, involving eating only foods you don't react to, usually only those you cook yourself (or cooked by another family member, like a partner, or, if you're lucky, a parent or sibling or other close relative). And lots of probiotics!
