I like the book My First Signs by Annie Kubler a lot because it is kid-friendly and colorful and big and has cute pictures. I like that it shows little kids signing everything....it was my dd's favorite signs book.

I have several ASL books, and "Sign With Your Baby" by Dr. Joseph Garcia is a good one to begin with. About half the book is how to start signing with your baby, and the other half is a pretty decent vocabulary section with pretty clear sign pictures.

Is the Garcia book asl based? I want to teach sign language to ds, but I only want to teach asl.
