"Skin Deep" Article: Uh-Oh, Now What Do I Use for Baby Skin Care Products?

Okay, so I looked up my "super natural" baby products on this site, and there were still risks associated with them! Petroleum Jelly had less risks than Burt's Bees because of the Vitamin E (tocopherol)!! WTH?

www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep/

Should I just use Olive oil on my baby's dry skin? Should I just bathe him in Mamas milk (ha ha)?

What do you hard core purist Mamas do?

I'm freaked out!

Thanks in advance!!!

It seems like what I'm seeing is, and correct me if I'm wrong, that the less ingredients a product has, the safer it is statistically (within reason/depending on that ingredient). This might be because most ingredients, regardless, have some level of risk.

Wow. I feel like with food and now skin care, "whole food products" are the way I'm being steered to go. I'll just eat avocados and then smear what's left on my legs before I shave.

I use plain apricot oil on their skin and that works great. I do have CA Baby and Weleda Calendula cream as well. I better check if those are safe-I just assumed they were. The fake vitamin E is what made me not pick Burt's Bees.
Ahhhh... See, I didn't even know there was such a thing as "fake vitamin E". Is that the tocopherol acetate?

I was using Burt's Bees apricot oil. What kind are you using?
Ok my Weleda has the green light buy my CA Baby sunscreen is moderate concern. Now I need to check my Aubrey Organics sunscreen.....
Yeah that is the synthetic vitamin E. I just use 100% apricot kernel oil. I think I have the NOW brand. Thanks so much for that link. I think I will stick with Aubrey Organics from now on. I had their Green Tea sunscreen but it was so messy so I switched to CA Baby. But I think the mess is worth it.
Yeah, Aubrey is close to food grade, and the less ingredients the better in my opinion...
Yes Organic Olive oil on your babes skin is great! We use Weleda calendula cream it's great and has no junk..Personally we AVOID CA Baby products as they have parabens! Parabens have been linked to causing cancer etc...So we avoid them! Jason's/Earth Best has a new baby line w/no parabens or junk and it's organic and very reasonable priced at webvitamins.com

I'm not sure how old your babe is but if you are ex. nursing I'd suggest taking some EFA's for you..This will help with dry skin etc...

Also check your laundry soap, baby soap, baby shampoo, baby lotions, chlorine in your drinking/bathing water??

Good luck!

What is better, in terms of skin care - olive oil or grapeseed oil?

both are great! olive oil is a little heavier with a slight scent, grapeseed oil is very light and doesn't have a scent. i was a massage therapist for years before having my son and used grapeseed oil on all my clients! but i make my own cream now with shea butter and olive oil and almond oil, so i like both.

Uhmm, so that's what I do.

DS, who I have to say is adorably cute, had a horrible, really horrible rash on his scalp, forehead, cheeks, arms, legs, torso, abdomen, back, and neck.
So that left clear his nose and diaper area.

We tried all kinds of lotions, potions, avoiding all kinds of food, avoiding all kinds of allergens>>>>>>NADA! Same rash.

I remembered that leaky milk cured my chapped nipples, and can sometimes help mastitis, so I began bathing DS in leftover EBM and water, then rubbing him down iwth organic olive oil (bionatura brand). Well, the rash has cleared. It begins to come back when (know we know) DS encounters perfume, like on the babysitter or MIL.

And now I get to eat whatever I want.
Also, when I nurse DS, I collect the leaking milk from the other breast and rub the "fresh stuff" all over his head, face, belly, back, extremities. He used to have this "can I nurse in peace?" look, but now he's used to it.

We use olive oil and also like Natural Family Boutique's line of baby care stuff. It's all natural with no fragrance added. I was really upset to find that Burt's Bees adds fragrances
We stopped using it immediatly.

I seem to recall from looking at that site that Terressentials consistently rated highest for baby products. And one of the owners wrote an article on body products in the latest issue of Mothering. I just placed my first order with them, and am THRILLED with the quality of their products. I got their baby soap/shampoo (only bad thing is it isn't "no tears", so I'm careful), hand soap for us, bath soap for us, lotion for me, and white chocolate mint lip balm (it tastes/smells like thin mint cookies, lol). Anyway, I love everything I got. Check out their website -- they have good info on their philosophy, as well as articles written about them in the media. Seem like a very legit and worthwhile company.

Olive oil is great for skin care, and not just infant... you can make a milk bath out of 50% milk powder and 50% buttermilk powder. Lovely stuff. In the end, the whole point of a bath is to remove dirt. And you can do that just with water and a washcloth.

You can also drop some lavender essential oil in a bath and that's antibacterial/antifungal. There you go! I usually will use that for quickie baths.

Also, you can use lanolin bar soap for hair. It's awesome. I use the soap from www.sudzndudz.com for my kids' hair. It's wonderful. And smells good.

Wow Mamas! I went away on vacation and come back to all this fantastic information! Thank you times a million! And yes, I will go with my instincts and use olive oil and breastmilk more often, like you said!

PS Right now I am really diggin' using whole food products and not a name brand for my chunky little monkey....
Thanks for the link to the skin deep article. It was great to see which products are least problematic. We are going to try some of the Aubrey's Organic products on my son's sensitive skin.

Well.... yeah actually. Baby's skin doesn't need moisturizer if they're hydrated. I use EBM on dry skin, including my own- it's amazing! For the occasional diaper rash, I use olive oil as a barrier agent.

For bathtime, it's water with lavendar and a washcloth.

Cheers!

Ya' know, my baby has really dry skin in the eyebrow area. I've tried everything and it won;t get moisturized for any length of time. I'm gonna' try breastmilk!

PS Hey, Boof, my name is Beth, too!

Yay another Beth!

EBM is amazing. Blemishes disappear... dry skin becomes smooth... bruises cuts and scrapes vanish and on and on and on!
