My friend is at her wits end with sleep issues for her son. She has read all the books and is on the verge of Ferberizing him. She has ruled out problems with ped but her child is waking every hour on the hour. He's now 8 months. She has seen a chiropractor and a children's naturopath both of which recommended ferber. I would like to offer her some alternative solution as I just don't want to see this poor angel have to cio. i have recommended books like the no cry solution etc. but she asserts that she has tried them all. Does anyone know of someone that can help (professional or organization ) that you can recommend that is AP oriented.
thanks

What's going on with them? Is he teething? Starting to crawl? Are they co-sleeping? Is he getting enough naps? Has she tried a ND?
Maybe just send her here to MDC.

apparently, she has had this problem since his birth where he awakes every 1 hour at night. They do not co-sleep though, she does not bf, apparently, its not just a milestone thing. I know she's not very AP oriented b/c when she saw me wearing my dd, she said 'i was spoiling her' - her son is often found in his infant seat. I know its none of my business but I really want to provide her options that do not involve CIO. I explained that with my dd, wearing her really got her into a good sleep system as did co-sleeping, and the fact that I am still nursing but she kind of looks at me like I'm off. I think its due to lack of information more than anything...

Whats an ND? I tried sending her here and to ovusoft but no luck...she feels like she's read/researched enough.

Though I see that she has seen a naturopathic doc, I wouls still consider food sensitivities. My son used to wake up crying every hour... nothing showed up on allergy tests , then or now for foods. But he has a very obvious problem with grains.... our sleep situation was solved completely when it gluten was cut out of our diet.

Has she tried "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Dr. Weissbluth? He advocates three different methods of getting baby to sleep one of which is CIO, which he claims solves problems the fastest if it is suited to your baby's temperament but is pretty free about doing what works for you. It helped me tremendously in understanding baby sleep needs. Dr. Sears also has some great advice. Frankly at this point if I were her I'd almost be ready to let him CIO too. She hasn't slept in 8 months??

Here are some sleep clinics I found by googling Sleep clinic Toronto.

Perhaps she can try co-sleeping. The baby may just calm down beside her and sleep longer. The baby may have an allergy (especially if she didn't BF). She can try an elimination diet. Or if all fails and she is just too sleep deprived to function, she can CIO with her being there. That way the baby is not abandoned.
