Dd falls asleep in the car seat about 3 out of 7 days. We go run errands and bam 5 minutes from home and she is out. Should I move her and risk waking her and having nap interupted? Is it okay for them to sleep in it? I unstrap the one across her chest but not sure if I should just leave it. I set her down wherever I am going to be so she isn't alone. But, the health dept here said now there is a risk of SIDS. I feel like after 7yrs I have forgotten everything I learned with older DD. What do you do and is it a bad thing. I was always and still am if babe is sleeping LET them sleep...

I always took ds out of his carseat, we didn't have a bucket seat so leaving him wasn't really an option unless I wanted to sit in the car for his whole nap. He's always been a pretty heavy sleeper and if he stirred awake while I was taking him out of the seat he usually went right back to sleep with a quick "shhh... go back to sleep" or occasionally he'd nurse and go back to sleep. Even now at 4.5 if he falls asleep in the carseat I can move to his bed without him really waking up

I've been told that you should take them out - so thats what we do. Only, if my BF is around I will go lay down in bed and get ready to nurse, and then BF will take Lincoln out of the car seat as gently as possible and then will lay him down next to me so that he can nurse back to sleep. If its just me then I will get ready to nurse, take him out gently, and immediately put him to my breast and then lay down with him so he can fall back to sleep.

We're still perfecting it - its a little hard! I do leave him in the carseat for a few minutes if I need to use the bathroom or something first though.

Um, what? what SIDS risk? I always leave DS in the car seat, buckled in, if he's sleeping in it. I put him in the seat in the living room and stay within earshot. If I take him out while he's sleeping, he wakes up and gets really grumpy.

I know the SIDS thing threw me off too. But, they also (health dept) frown on bed-sharing etc. Today she slept for 2 hrs in the bucket. I hate that damn thing and I am going to buy a big one this weekend. So that will tell us if she will stay asleep. I have only taken her out a few times and she wakes, nurses and then smiles and is ready to play. She takes one long nap then is a big cat napper....i.e. nurse sleep for 20 minutes etc. But, its all good. Thanks mamas!

An infant died in Quebec recently from sleeping in a carseat. This is part of where the fear about it is from right now. We never had a bucket seat so it wasn't an option but generally I found ds would stay asleep through a transfer from the car to another spot if he really needed the sleep.

Ive never heard of the SIDS thing. It depends for me. If I know that he really needs the sleep than I'll leave him in there at risk of waking him up. Usually I leave him in there. If Im okay with the chance of him waking, than I'll take him out. Also depends on how sound asleep he is, how long he has been sleeping etc..

If ds2 falls asleep in his bucket I leave hm in it. I carry it very carefully into the house, set it down very gently, and attempt to eat or pee uninterupted.

He says buckled in the seat, and it's sitting on the floor so I feel safe doing it. Some nights a drive is the only way he'll sleep, so once he's asleep I leave him be.

I think the problem is that the angle of the carseat is different when it's set on a table or the floor than it is in the carseat base so it's not ideal for their airways and can be fatal. I read about this a while ago and got really worried so I did some reading and I found that one my carseat it has a little thing on the side saying if it's at a good angle or not (all blue if it is, orange is showing if the angle is not ideal). There is some warning above it saying that it is not safe unless it is all blue (at the ideal angle). I figured out that if I take the handle and turn it all the way to the back so that it makes it stand up a little then it puts it at the perfect angle. Since we figured that out we have been more willing to leave our ds in his carseat to sleep if he falls asleep while we're out. I still dont' do it a ton just cause I don't want him to get used to it though.

The bucket seat was the ONLY place my son would sleep-until he was 18 months old!! I was not aware of the SIDS risk at the time, but I'm honestly not sure I'd do anything differently anyway. He had horrible reflux and this position was the only one in which he would stay asleep for more than 5 minutes. He never transferred either. So there he slept until he literally was hanging over the ends
I could not even buckle him in the end, but would lie down on the bed next to him (bucket seat on the floor) and just be present for naps and nighttime.

I'd like to say I'd never do it again. . . but I've learned to never say never when it comes to babies.

If you're going to let a baby sleep in the infant seat, make sure you leave him/her strapped in and buckled. Don't even loosen it. Otherwise, they can get tangled up in the harness and potentially get strangled.

One of my DCPs said the same thing about her boy. he slept in the bucket seat in the pack and play next to her bed for the first year because of reflux. So never say never is a very good way to look at it.

My pedi said that it was fine as long as it was no more than 3 hours, because after that time the angle and weight pushing on their tail bone can cause issues. We tried that with our daughter and it worked for a little bit, but then we tried laying her on her stomach to sleep and haven't had issues with sleeping since.
