I read somewhere that sleeping on your back during pregnancy is bad because it cuts off a cord which supplies blood to the placenta. This is the first I ever heard of it and am worried because I always sleep on my back. Has anyone else ever heard of this?

You're fine sleeping on your back at this point in pregnancy. Your body will let you know when to start side sleeping. It will just start getting uncomfortable. And really, before it cuts off any blood to your baby, it will cut off blood to your legs and they'll get numb. So, that would be a good sign to turn over

Yup. You should be fine for quite a while still.

Lemmee tell ya, I am REALLY looking forward to the hip pain that happens when you HAVE to sleep on your left side. *sigh* I will be getting my stack of pillows ready for that....

In various pregnancies I've been most comfortable on my back or my stomach in the first trimester...my mw assured me that I'd get uncomfortable enough to shift before I was going to do any damage to myself or the baby.

I'm already mostly wanting to be on my side, but i think that might partly have to do with 2+ years of nursing in bed, and seriously I'm not sure if my body remembers how to sleep any way *except* on my side,

uuuuuuuuuuurg. I had almost forgotten about that.... but you are so right.

I typically sleep on my tummy, or if my back hurts, I sleep on my back. But when I was late in my pregnancy with my son, I slept (if that is what you can even call it...) half sitting up reclined on my couch because my hips hurt so badly. Ahhh. Good times.

Funny that you mention this because it crossed my mind recently!

I agree w/ the PPs, it's not an issue until your uterus gets heavy (20wks +).

I learned this comfortable way to sleep in my Bradley classes. I don't know if I can describe it but it relieved some of the pressure on my hips. I laid down on my left side and then rolled forward toward my belly a bit to get the direct pressure off my hip. I put a pillow under my belly and then pulled my right leg up to an almost 90degree angle and rested it on usually two pillows. My left arm was under my head and then my right arm was on another pillow in front of me. Phew, that sounds complicated. It was comfy anyway, I labored that way too.

sleeping like that is a sign that I am pregnant I did that in the very begining with Ds and can still only be that way with this one right now
also sleeping on you back late in pregnancy is not fun when pregnant with Ds I somehow ended up on my back and was unable to move he ended up on my nerves or something it was so scary! BUT I was about 32weeks or something around there.

I hadn't really thought about this yet! I can't sleep on my stomach anymore- it's not comfortable- maybe because my mind is telling me I'm laying on the baby or something- hehe.. even though I know I'm not! I usually move around a lot in my sleep though so.. we'll see what happens later on!

yeah i am not looking forward to the excruciating hip pain later either

i still sleep on my back-ish--kinda halfway between side and back sleeping. i slept on my back even in later pregnancy last time--always for short stretches, until it got more uncomfortable than my hips were making me when on my side!

Me too, minus the arm pillow. I have a nursling where the pillow would go! I just rotate back to get to the "bottom" (left) breast.

I started having TERRIBLE sacroiliac pain at 10 weeks. I had it with Carter, too. I was a chiropractor as soon as it started, and it has helped so much. With Carter, I just suffered through, as it got worse and worse. It was amazing when I realized that it didn't have to be painful.
