I've been using the hip carry almost exclusively since Jackson turned about 4 months old. He loves it, but he can't sleep that way. He looks really uncomfortable in the cradle carry, he's too long and really squirms against it unless he's dead tired. I'm looking for instructions on a carry that works for older children and is comfortable enough for them to sleep in (I'm talking about a ring sling, I have a fleece pouch that he sleeps in easier but its still too hot here to use that sling very often.)

Thanks, mamas

With my 2 year old I've used tummy to tummy when sleeping and modified cradle. With both holds her legs are ouside the sling. With the tummy to tummy her bum and torso are in the sling and her legs are wrapped around me if that makes sense. With the cradle her legs stick out the side and her bum and the rest of her body are laying in the sling, her legs are out the ring side of the sling. She's also fallen asleep well on my back usually I can pull some fabric over her head and she sleeps fine like that hurts my back though so it only happens sometimes.

I use the chest to chest carry with my seven month olds when they need to sleep. The baby rests his head on the top of my breast--a nice pillow I think! I pull the fabric of the sling up high so that it supports the baby's neck a little.

(I am using a kissa-sling, but I assume that most ring-slings are pretty similar).

It's very comfy, and I feel prefectly safe carrying my babies this way. However, the instructions that came with our sling said not to use this position because the sling makers think the baby could slip out. I just make a deep pocket and get those little butts really deep in it, and I really don't see how the baby could slip out unless maybe I was doing jumping jacks and being totally negligent

Janessa - a question... when you do the modified cradle, is your baby facing towards you or facing upwards? I hadn't thought about taking his legs out of the sling, that just may work!

Lex - I like the tummy carry too, that works well when ds is tired but not really sleepy (wants to rest comfortably but not sleep). He's never fallen asleep in that hold, I think its still too upright for him.

Well since she usually nursed to sleep lol she would be facing towards me tummy to tummy well laying down. Once she was done nursing she would turn her face away from my body sometimes but she usually started facing towards me.

Hope that helps if not let me know and I'll make dh take a picture when he gets home

Lindy will fall asleep while sitting in the legs-crossed facing forward position. She usually slumps over to the side once she's asleep, though, and I end up using one arm to keep her semi-upright. I also put her in a lying-down position to nurse, with her legs hanging out like Janessa described (except I usually have her head on the ring side and her legs on the opposite side), and she falls asleep like that.
