Personally, I don't like a pouch for a newborn. I want something that I can adjust, because with a newborn, I may use several different holding positions in a day--cradle while they are nursing, heart to heart while just sleeping, then when they get a tiny bit bigger, front-facing (kangaroo carry) so they can see things. IME, one pouch just won't allow for all that very well. Unless, maybe, it was a very stretchy pouch. Or maybe and adjustable pouch (no personal exp. with an AP).
I don't have much experience with wraps, (just one I've designed myself--I love it for wearing long-term, but not for nursing in...guess I have a learning curve, LOL!)
Anyway, to the original question: I personally choose a ring sling for the most adjustability/versatility and still easy to use with a newborn. I'm partial to unpadded varieties.
Edited to change "learning curse" to "learning curve".....although the former may actually be more accurate, LOL!
