Sigh..... I hope no one minds but I need to vent a bit. I just spoke with
my mom on the phone. Here is how the conversation went. (First a little
background, Annika isn't vaacinated, we don't talk about it with anyone but
my family is under the impression that we were simply waiting until Annika
was a bit older/bigger and would then do it. Jason and I've since changed
our minds but I never felt the need to share that with them)

Mom: So did Annika get her shots yet?
Me: (thinking she is talking about the flu shot) what shots?
Mom: Her shots so she can go to school.
Me: (What the heck, she's 2!) No
Mom: she has to have them to go to school.
Me: No, actually in the State of MN we are allowed to file a philosophical
exemption
Mom: did your Dr. tell you that?
Me: No, I don't need a Dr. to tell me that, I've done my research
Mom: did you see that those kids have Polio?
Me: they don't have Polio, they tested positive for the OPV virus, you would
probably test positive for this virus if anyone ever bothered to check it.
They aren't sick or showing symptoms.
Mom: well I don't want Annika to get sick!
Me: I don't want her to get sick either. (while thinking, well Jason and I
are a bit sick of taking care of her and we've been trolling around hoping
she would get sick! What a ridiculous thing to say!)

Then I had to take a call, oh yeah, this was while I'm at
work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Argh. So I guess now wouldn't be a great time to bring up the fact that we're planning a homebirth???

Thanks, I feel much better.

Sounds like a real fun conversation. : I know how you feel - I finally had to tell my mom the topic of vaccinations was off-limits. This doesn't stop her from letting me know every time the local news has a story about an outbreak of something, but it has ended the debate between us. We went round and round, each trying to convince the other of our point of view, when finally I realized she wasn't going to change her mind, and I wasn't going to change mine, so what was the point of talking about it? I know she's genuinely concerned for the health of my daughter. My mom loves my DD so very much. We just disagree on how best to protect her, is all. But I didn't need the criticism and stress anymore.

Sorry you had to go through this today!

Hi Nostrow!
I'm from s MN also. Have you been reading the giant thread on the MNpolio ?
Very interesting and smart mamas there.
I have a first grader that is not fully vaxed and a 4yo that attends ECFE that has had 1 shot. I have used the exemption forms for both of them
I feel like a bit of a criminal for having to get the forms notorized while the parents that vax w/o thinking about it just get to send the vax form to school...

My dh's parents would probably be mad that we have not done the shots but my mom is a granola girl all the way and would be upset if I did! Such a tough issue to sort out...

This is a week for rants! My dh and I have decided to do very selective/delayed vax, and have told my mom. She seems ok with it, but doesn't know that we really don't intend to give babe hardly any of them. I won't privy her to the information ykwim? Your conversation sounds very similar to some I have been having with my mom. Hang in there mama~

Thanks guys! Hey boycrazy! Nice to meet you. I WISH I had a granola mom! It just gets a little old to always have to sort-of 'hide' how we do things just because it's different. I have peeked at the MNPolio thread, maybe I'll wander back over........

Hope everyone has a great weekend!
