nak...

For those using an SNS, have yoyu ever tried using powdered formula? I've heard that it can cllog the tubes, so i've been buying liquid concentrate. Problem is my LO needs expensive nutrimigen formula, and he's down to only 2-4 oz per DAY of supplement.
: At $7 per can,I'm getting tired of throwing away 1/2 full cans because they've been open too long.

Anyone have experience using powdered formula in the SNS? Is there any way to prepare it so it won't clog tubes?

Thanks!

That's all I've ever used. I'm too cheap to buy the pre-made stuff because, like you, I would have to throw a lot of it out. I haven't had any problems with clogging. I mix the formula in a separate bottle and then pour it into the SNS bottle.

I totally know what you mean, and yes, I used powder eventually, just put it into a Medela pumping bottle that wasn't too full, and shook it up hard. Rarely had a clog, and those could be cleaned out easily.

But here's one concern for you to think about. Is there a difference in ingredients for Nutramigen between powder and liquid? We did Alimentum, and there was a difference - corn in the powder, not in the liquid. Corn is a potential allergen, of course, so might be worth checking quickly.

I've heard that using an immersion blender to mix the formula prevents the clumps. The Lact-Aid set up comes with a little strainer for powdered formula.
I'm too lazy, though, and use 10 oz of liquid a day. It is expensive.
How old is your little one? If he's anywhere close to a year - and has no dairy issues, obviously - you could just use homogenized cow's milk. That's Dr. Newman suggests in lieu of supplementing with formula for small amounts.

Actually, you should be using boiling water to prepare formula. I'll have to find the link somewhere but using boiling water helps to eliminate the bacteria that may be lurking in the formula.
