Hi, I posted here a few days ago seeking a new sippy system and after some responses have decided I just need to figure out why the kleen kanteen one we have is not working (leaks). So somebody posted that the plastic valve thingy has to be inserted a certain way - well I finally got home to check ours and we do not even have the darn thing in (i.e. the clear plastic valve is not on the green spout) so duh, that would be why it is leaking now.

However, as I recall, the thing always leaked and we finally just lost track of the valve b/c it was leaking anyway, so why clean one more thing. So I have ordered two more green spouts which come with the valves.

MY BIG QUESTION is, when I look at the sippy cup adapter kits, like this one: http://www.getngreen.com/store/Produ...d=KPPA-KSPOUTS it looks to me like it is three pieces, as in green spout, black ring that spout goes into, and the black tube thing they show laying on its side. I have never had this black tube thing!?! I ordered the cup originally from nubius organics, so I went to their site to try and figure out just what they sold me, but there is no broken down picture, it just says "sippy adapter". And it seems strange also that on the kleen kanteen website, they do not sell this tube separately - they do sell the adapter, which looks like it has the tube attached to it: http://www.kleankanteen.com/products...s-classic.html eta: the first pic that comes up, obviously, is not the adapter, but you can click on the adapter kit in a photo below.
I'm just so confused - all I have is the black ring and the green spout. Is the fact that I never had that black tube the reason my cup never worked? It has always leaked to some extent - from the spout by the way, it does not leak from where the cap screws on.

Any help is greatly appreciated. For some reason this has got me all stressed

We've always had the black tube thing, but our sippies still leak quite badly so we stopped using them. They worked quite well for a long time so I figured they broke down with use and need new cap attachments.

Oh, I feel like such a dink - went home and started ranting to DH about the sippy situation, so he picks it up, pulls out the black tube thing.....
Um.....don't know, I guess I just thought that top ring was a part of the sippy container. Ugh, OK, so yeah, we've always had the black ring thing and I'm just a flighty, over-dramatic looney tune this week. Sigh, what can you do. Anyway, so I am now just gonna wait for new spouts to come and NOT wash them in dishwasher (yes to pp, we were putting them throught he dishwasher, so good suggestion, we'll not do that and hopefully it should help) and then live happily ever after with our kleen kanteen. Thank you all so much for your help!

ETA: Loreidna, the replacement spouts aren't too spendy - I think it was like $4 for two of them, of course you have to pay shipping and all, but I figure worth it for how expensive the bottle was to begn with!

Thanks, Dylan. Yeah, I will do that maybe with a second child. Right now I'm hoping to wean my daughter from the sippy cup (she's 3.5 years old). I bought a KK Stainless Steel cap and she uses it as a regular water bottle.

I had mine for a while before I figured out that it came apart like that, too....

Update...well, got the replacement spouts...they're better, but still leak! I figured out that they leak from the little vent hole, and not a ton - like if they tip over, they don't leak. What happens is ds drinks from it, milk gets drawn up and then I guess the milk that stays between the clear gasket and the green spout bubbles up out of the vent. So it isn't like a downpour, but it does get all over DSs hands (he could care less) or dribbles all down the side of the cup. No messes that are impossible to deal with, and he doesn't get juice, so no major staining, but it is still a bit annoying. But we'll still be using it since its not nasty plastic.

For future reference, the replacement spouts are sold anywhere that sells avent baby bottles/sippy cups (i.e. Target, many drug stores, etc.). So, in most cases, you can buy them locally rather than having to pay shipping.

I don't think there's such thing as a completely leak-proof sippy cup, but we've found the KK to perform quite well compared to many others. Shaking it upside down will produce some drips, but I can put them in my kids' lunch boxes without having to worry about leaking. We only put water in ours, so the little drips here and there really aren't a big deal. The Siggs drive me crazy because if they're left open upside down, they can leak out into a big puddle (usually in a car seat, in our experience).

HTH!
