saw the midwife last night. i am on the outer edges of where she feels comfortable driving to for a birth in feb. she wondered if i could find someone else to do PP care, since coming back out several times might be hard for her, esp. if she has other births to do. then i found out we would have to pay her just about half her fee. $1400.

ugh.

so now i am going to go meet a lay midwife.

why does this have to be some freaking complicated.... only in the US would having a baby require so many convolutions!

well, i talked to the lay midwife on the phone. i think i am going to go with her.

i couldnt meet her today because she got called to a birth this afternoon. but i called my former midwife who trained her partially and she wholehearted recommended her. i like her laid back hands off approach. i felt the CNM was a bit "cookie cutter" in her approach to prenatal care. i am also concerned about her missing the birth if she is 1 1/2 hours away. i don't want to pay her $1400 so she can help pack up the birth pool.

the lay midwife is less for her whole fee and she is only 45 minutes from her.

i haven't totally decided, but i am strongly leaning in that direction.

Hello from a former Upstate NYer!

Here in AZ I know many mws will drive hours for a birth. My last mw went to the CA border for 1 birth. Unless you know you have very fast labors, in which case she could miss it if you lived in the same town
, I wouldn't think 1.5 hours was all that long. Go with who you feel comfortable with!
It took me 4 interviews to find my mw. There is the perfect mw for everyone.

the CNM felt it was far. *she* was concerned about missing my birth. and getting around upstate NY in feb. in the country can be tricky.

my choices are limited to the CNM i saw and two lay midwives. that's it. NY is making it really hard to have a homebirth unless you are amish.

My midwives ended up missing the birth, they were at a meeting two hrs away. MW asked if I needed them to leave but I said no; at that point I thought I had hours. My labor ended up being so quick that dh almost missed it, arriving 20 min befor dd's birth. His friend asked dh if we got a refund and dh said that they earned their pay just for cleaning up the mess "it was gross."

I'd go with the lay midwife.

I drove from LI to Binghamton in a blizzard during spring break one year, the only reason I made it back to school on time is because I got lost and missed all the road blocks
. Considering the time of year I see how the distance would be a problem in your location.
