I ask my relative of her 1 year old son at the family gathering, basically trying to make it a neutral question.

She replies "well just at night..." and I'm basically waiting for some some comment about starting to wean him or what all, but instead she continues:
"....he's usually too active during the day to slow down to nurse." !!!

She went on to add, "500 calories a day is 500 calories a day and as long as he's willing to nurse I'm all for it." Which on the one hand sounds kind of wishy-washy, like it's just the calories she's burning that she cares about, but it turns out she's trained as an LC so I think that was a joke.

She sounds like she has a positive attitude about nursing to me.

Me too. it's the kind of thing I would say, to deflect more controversial conversation at a family gathering if I didn't feel like getting into a debate. (Which is rare for me.. )

Probably depends on the volume of milk consumed. An active toddler who's still getting most most of their nutrition from mama milk would cause you to burn more calories than one who only tops up with milk, I'd think. Of course, with an active toddler you'll be burning a huge number of extra calories so it would probably be difficult to tell how many come from bf and how many come from running around.

Maybe she's thinking it's the calories HE'S getting rather than the ones she's burning. As in, he's getting 500 calories/day in nutrition from my BM, so I'm all for his nursing. I never worry about what else my toddler eats because she's still BF.

No, it was definitely her *burning* calories she was talking about. And the context was really to make it palatable to a pretty mainstream crowd since she was basically saying that she was going to do CLW.
