A little background. DD was sensititve (GI) and eczema to dairy via my breastmilk as a young infant, I cut it out, eczema greatly reduced with a few remaining patches, GI symptoms disappeared. I re-introduced it at 8 mos with no problems. DD consumed dairy herself from 12 mos through 2 years without problems. 1st took DD to a ped allergist shortly after her second birthday, last year at this time because of Chronic rhinitis. Skin testing preformed. All neg. Ped. Allergist said she had "non-allergic rhinitis". Whatever that is. It did clear up sometime in late June. About 2 weeks after I weaned DD last August (also ragweed/mold season here in WI) she started having persistant rhinitis and allergic shiners. (Here and there eczema which had continued since infancy.) Took her to a different ped.allergist in early October (no let up in the symptoms) , they were SURE she looked like an allergic kid. They RAST tested her. Declared her non-allergic and offered antibiotics for a sinus infection!
(We said UM NO THANKS!)
I then did a little poking around, saw a few holistic practitioners and determined I should try cutting out gluten and dairy, which I began in Late October. (Along with dilegent record keeping.) Runny nose/shiners cleared up in early December. (Also, conicidentaly, the 1st hard freeze here.) Eczema came and went this winter. A few flares, well controlled with good moisturizer.
I felt triumphant. DD only had one cold, that was clearly a cold this winter and other than that no runny nose, shiners only when overtired. I was very diligent about her diet, to the point of mental exhaustion. Well, last weekend it got pretty warm and the tree pollen count spiked around these parts. Begin runny nose in DD, shiners that come and go depending on the severity of her congestion. My allergies (ST confirmed) and DH allergies (also ST confirmed) also started at the same time? So WTH??????? I have NOT introduced any gluten/dairy. She does not have a cold- this rhinitis is the same as last fall and spring. I just so frustrated, as on one hand the disappearance of her symptoms seemed to track with the dietary elimination - but the timing of the dietary elimination/symptoms also tracked very closely with peak allergy season around here. So was it all for naught? What do I do now? DD is REALLY starting to resist/rebel her "special diet" and sometimes I just feel like giving up. Any thoughts for me?

The rhinitis, is that just congestion, or is it more histamine related? Did you ever try antihistamines?

I've been looking at 'allergic' symptoms as symptoms of nutrient deficiencies/blocked detox pathways instead. If histamine is high, then folate and B12 could help make more methyl groups to deactivate the histamine. If it's just straight congestion, I would look at calcium regulation (calcium is the signal that turns on mucous production), which means taurine and magnesium. Does she crave chocolate? Eggs?

Sorry, I should have added that she has been pretty non-respondent to antihistamines, and we have tried them all. Congestion AND rhinitis. (Snorty, sniffly and really runny.) Interesting about eggs and chocolate. She does LOVE chocolate (not sure if it is craving) and also eggs. She only likes the yolks lately though. (Hard-boiled).
Nutritional supplements I give her are multivitamin, cal/mag, all-flora probiotics, D3, and fish oil.

So are you saying too much calcium can turn on histamine? What about the apparent seasonality of this?
Thanks for your help!

I don't know how seasonality plays in. I'm thinking you might be in a similar situation to us, and I outlined it in the calcium thread, so I'll just link you instead of typing it all out again

Does she have any keratosis pilaris/strong nails/white fuzzy tongue that's not thrush?

I think the thread you linked was about calcium supp. and corn
, I did read through the other one that you posted on though and now my head is spinning!

She doesn't have any KP, strong nails, or fuzzy white tongue-
so if those are symptoms of problems with calcium, I'm not sure that is it.
Is there some sort of beginners guide or book about this nutritional deficiency/blocked detox pathways stuff? I think I need to start from the very beginning. I've read the thread in your siggy, and also the site you link to- but I'm lost in it all.

You're right, I fixed the link. Sorry about that!

the two sites where I'm trying to make things easier to understand are
www.eatingcultures.com (step by step, but old and needs updating)
and
www.detoxpuzzle.com (piece by piece, more science, but still in the beginning stages)

the KP stuff I think has to do with calcium issues PLUS good cysteine (mag/B6) levels. If you were deficient in those, then you could have calcium issues without those symptoms.
