I've been drinking a LOT of fluids this pregnancy - water, coconut water, occasional Gatorade, etc. But the last couple days I'm almost insatiably thirsty. Anyone else? Is this a sign of anything?

It could mean it's getting hot where you live and you need more water. I wouldn't suggest drinking gatorade since that can throw off your electrolytes.

The other thing it could be is gestational diabetes. It can show up at any time, and often the only symptom is drinking a lot more.

Yeah I have gd, really the biggest time I'll get really thristy is if my sugar is high.

If you can try eating low carb for a day & see how thirsty you feel...if you can't get a chance to use someones meter & check about 2 hours after you eat that is.

No chance to get anyone's meter to check. I did do the one-hour GD test like 6-7 weeks ago and it came back really good but I have had more sugars the past two weeks or so. Will cut way back today/tomorrow and see if it helps, thanks!

I was insanly thirsty with my first baby. And I mean, could not drink enough, thirsty all the time no matter how much water i drank. In my case it was my liver not acting right. It turned out to be HEELP Syndrom. The liver is involved with moving fluids and I was drinking and drinking, swelling and swelling...lol. Do you have any swelling? My feet and face were almost unrecognizable.

Nope. My face isn't swollen in the slightest. My left foot maybe a tiny bit but barely and my right foot not at all.

yeah, that happens to me every now and then. I end up drinking so much water that I can hear it sloshing in my stomach... at which point I realize that maybe I'm drinking too much.
I find that if I eat a little sugar (like fruit or juice) my crazy water craving disappears. I'm not so sure how that fits with why it's a sign of diabetes... but it works for me!

I'm in the same boat...so incredibly thirsty (and more so in the past few days)...I had the glucose teat and it was negative, so I'm not worried about GD...maybe it's just our bodies telling us to keep up with all that extra fluid we've got floating around us right now.

Thinking it might have been a bug (in addition to normal pregnancy stuff). I had also been SUPER tired and achy end of last week. Today the thirst isn't quite as bad and not as tired/achy (although still some). And DH told me that he's now super thirsty/dry mouth and tired/achy. Hmmm.

I had insane thirst near the end with my son. There was no medical reason, though I wonder if it is because as the babies grow there's less room for them to hang on to fluid? Anyway, I was so well hydrated I didn't get stretch marks until 37 weeks, despite a family history of them. It was a lovely side effect!

Hmmm in addition to any bug we may be fighting, my thirst/dry mouth feeling today GREATLY increased after I had the following shake around 2:45 this afternoon. I blended:

- a bit of frozen peach slices (maybe 4-5 small slices)
- half a small frozen banana
- 4 ounces organic 2% milk
- 2 ounces OJ
- about 4 ounces 2% Fage
- 20 ml Floradix liquid magnesium
- one scoop natural vanilla whey protein powder
- about 1/4 cup frozen organic spinach

Anything in there you think would make me thirsty/have dry mouth?

The mystery continues!

Well if you have gest. diabetes pretty much the banana, peach, milk & the oj are a carb bomb which could make you super thirsty.

True but I've been having milk all along, and bananas, etc once in a while. Plus the cookie the day before didn't make me thirsty, but the shake yesterday did. Can't figure it out but will have no shake today or if I do have one will cut out the OJ, peaches and banana today and instead use blueberries, milk, Fage and protein powder - plus the magnesium? And maybe some coconut oil, coconut water and pieces of coconut?

Wouldn't I feel shaky or other symptoms if gestational diabetes? Or have had a problem with my one-hour test?

No I never felt shaky or any other symptoms except being thirsty. Idk about your one hour, how long ago was it?

I have read being thirsty is also something that is common in pg, I never had that problem in my other pgs w/o gest. diabetes so ymmv.

If it were gd, your symptoms with the shake could vary depending on the time of day you drank it & the amt of exercise you have had before & after drinking it. Personally I can walk or clean very mildly & my sugars will be normal no matter what I've eaten.

My one-hour test was around 26-27 weeks (so like 7 weeks ago). I've had a very slight amount of sugar in my urine at my last two visits but not enough for them to even mention (but I always look at the strip after the nurse does it). I did walk on the treadmill for about 30 minutes yesterday around 9 am and had the shake around 2:30. I like the shake for getting in the protein powder, liquid magnesium, etc - do you think it would be less of a "sugar bomb" if I cut out the OJ, use unsweetened soy milk or almond milk instead (4 ounces only), still use the Fage, replace the frozen banana with frozen blueberries and use a little coconut meat and coconut water? And still the protein powder and magnesium?

Well idk what the carb count is in some of the ingredients you listed. Here's an idea to try, although it sounds like you're getting pretty close to delivering anyway but see if this might help your thirstiness.

Try a day where you keep your carbs at about 40/meal & 30/snack. I usually eat about every 3 hours(snacks in between meals) & have a carb/protein snack before bed, along with exercising after dinner. See if it helps you not be so thristy?

If it does, it might be something to just use for a guildeline until you deliver or get in to see your dr & let them know. I know I can not STAND the feeling of never getting enough water that I get if my sugar is even a little high.

I use the free myfitnesspal.com food database to check a lot of my carbs fwiw.

Thanks! Just had the following for breakfast - two small pieces whole wheat toast (12g carbs each) - one with a sunny side up egg on top (and bit of butter) and the other with 1 tbsp natural PB. Will see. Also wondering if the thirstiness could be from the liquid magnesium? I only added it in last week.

If you want to, you can try to do a glucose test on yourself. I can send you a meter and some strips... I posted somewhere else on here the protocol for doing the test at home, with a meal, instead of the glucola crap. That way, you'll get three hours' worth of testing, which is *way* more accurate than the 1 hour GD test.

Anything with carbs in it is going to affect your blood glucose. Protein powders probably don't have many carbs, but the juices, fruits, breads, pastas, anything white, will affect you. Strawberries are the best fruit since they are low glycemic, meaning the sugars in strawberries will have a slower effect on blood glucose. Any other fruit is really high glycemic, unfortunately. Bananas are high, surprisingly. You'd think only citruses were, but no.

Higher protein diets are usually used by "regular" diabetics. We tend to try and keep lower carb, less than 30gms per meal, 20gms per snack. I shouldn't say "we", I'm not a low carber, since I enjoy my carbs. But, if you have to control by diet and not with insulin (like all T1s), then the low carb diets help a ton. Also, aerobic exercise helps bring sugars down, whereas strength training will bring them up.
