I, along with my 18mth old, are new to CDing (we're talking days... well, almost a week). I decided to go with CPF's (unbleached) and Pro Wrap Classics and rice paper liners to start, so that just in case I decided CDing wasn't for us, we wouldn't have spent our life savings in an experiment. I also bought 3 Polar Fleece and Hemp Terry Liners for use at night. Well, of course, I LOVE LOVE LOVE CDing and would like to branch out a bit. Part of the reason I started with just the basics is because I was so completely overwhelmed by all the choices. I know, I know, everyone has their own preferences, etc, etc. I was just wondering if you guys could gently guide me to the "next step". Where do I go from here? My thought is that I'll just buy one or two of one or two different kinds at a time... figure out what we like & what we don't and go from there. From reading some of the threads, I gather that cloth diapering can be a bit.... well, addictive. I don't want to get started down that road, hence, the desire for some direction from those of you who have already been where I am. Anyway, feel free to pm me or what ever is best. Thanks in advance for your wise words of wisdom!!
I would go with something that 'goes' with your CPF stash, like pocket diapers, or a few wool covers/soakers then you can branch out from there, like with an AIO or two. I really like HB's for a good quick AIO (get the doubler you will want one) and maybe a few fitteds after that. This way your not having to have the one diaper to go with one thing, like if you get a WIO where you need a snap in diaper to 'go' with it, or anything else that you can only use with one thing. I love the CPF's with wool soakers or covers, and it goes with ALL my cpf's ya know? ~

to the board! I am so happy you love cd'ing. It really is great isn't it?

If you love your prefolds, why do you want to "branch out?" If you have something that works and you like it, then there is no need to get all crazy. Prefolds are tried and true and plenty of mamas here use only prefolds.

However, I would recommend trying some wool covers over said prefolds. My favs are ones that are difficult to get (like Fuzbaby and Righteous Baby), but I also like Sugar Peas. I'm sure other ppl will give you more suggestions as well.

Have fun!!!

Hi Brook,
We're still fairly new to cd's. DD has been in cloth for close to 2 months and her big bro (25 months) has been for close to a week. You may want to add some hemp prefolds for night time - I love my Nighty Newts (www.littlelounginglizards.com). I also recommend venturing into some wool. DS has a bumpy wool cover and an aristocrats soaker. DD has a sugarpeas cover and I'm attempting to knit one - she'll be in college by then

Yes, it's very easy to get carry away. I'm trying to be good this week.

Brook~ I was just thinking of your question a bit more and had some questions for you. Why do you want to branch out? Are you looking for something trimmer? More absorbant? Less absorbant? Something easier? Something for dh or babysitters? Something cuter?

Some more info may help us make some more specific recommendations for ya.

Good question! Mostly, it's that I am such a skeptic.... it's hard for me to believe that I've found the absolute best diapering system for us on the first try. Secondly, I'm not so sure about the covers we're using. They haven't leaked yet, which is a good thing, but part of the reason I wanted to switch to cloth is so his bum could "breath"... does that make sense? When I change his diaper with the Pro-Wrap Classics, the inside of the cover is moist. I've been switching the covers throughout the day to allow them to dry-out in-between diaperings which is ok but I'm thinking there's gotta be a better solution. They also seem to retain the urine smell. If I use the same cover all day, just putting it back on him with a fresh cpf, by the end of the day the cover reeks of urine.... I want his bum to smell all nice and cottony-clean, not stinky. YKWIM? Cuteness isn't really an issue since dh and I are the only ones that usually see his diaper.... ease of use & comfort are my two main goals for cd's. Hope this helps make my question a bit clearer. Thank you all so much for taking the time to help me figure this out!

Brook~ You obviously did your homework first b/c you started w/ a very good system! Prefolds and Prowraps are tried and true.

As far as the covers go... you would probably like wool. Wool is very breathable and a natural fiber to boot. Here is an article about why wool is so great for diaper covers. There is a great resource page on wool covers here.

It's always handy to have a few aio's or pocket dipes on hand for those especially wiggly, diapering avoidance moments.

Soakers ROCK!!!! I recently simplified my stash and life to prefolds(because of an allergy issue) and honestly i cant say enough good things about CPFs....I cant wait to actually learn how to sew so i can make some of these puppies into fitteds....I love CPFs and personally now would not trade them..They are simple and you can dye them and make them funky colors and with a wool soaker they breath sooooo well...I also have some Breathable Poly Nikkys and I LOVE THEM....my sons bum feels sooooo cool when i touch it unlike the prorap effect.....
