By age 7, children given at least one antibiotic in the first six months and who were breast-fed for more than four months were three times more likely to develop allergies. However, breast-feeding did not influence the risk between antibiotics and asthma.
WHAT??? Am I the only one who doesn't understand this? How could breastfeeding past 4 months do anything but good for your child? And damn my ped for giving ds erythromiacin for an ear infection at 1 month. And stupid me for letting her.

Nope, no mistake. The original news release says the same thing.

"Researchers also say breast-feeding and a mother's history of allergies add to the risks of allergy for a child taking antibiotics."

There is a thread in the vax forum that we were briefly discussing breastfeeding too....it messes up the vaccination process....argh...I think what it boils down to is that they don't want women bf their babies...it interupts the things that they want to do.....

Stupidist thing I have ever heard.

nak

same was reported here too, here's what i can't understand that they don't mention: how many women with history of allergies etc are way more determined to ebf their babies than those without history of allergies etc so results are skewed, and how much worse would the health of the allergic/asthmatic babies be without bm?

we also need to know what they mean by bf - exclusively? or some artificial supplement? etc

but it sure gives plenty reason to keep clear of antibiotics

In the article I read about antibiotics and children, they ended with this:

"In a controversial finding, the team found that children who were breast-fed for more than four months who also received antibiotics were more likely to develop allergies. But other studies have shown breast-feeding protects against allergies and asthma, and Dr. Zoratti cautioned that the numbers in the Detroit study were too small to prove a link.

"Breast milk is a good thing for nutrition and a lot of other things. Based on the findings in our study, we wouldn't want to tell people to stop breast-feeding," he said."

Here's the link for the article:

At least in this case they were nice enough to talk about the study set-up and to caution against it given its small size and such.

Anyways, just thought some of you might find this interesting.
