I have lived in Las Vegas for 7 years and really like it. I have found that people either love it or hate it. Most people you meet are usually trying to leave so it can seem difficult to make lasting relationships. However, here are some groups you may want to join to get to know Las Vegas and the natural birthing/parenting community.

I think N. Las Vegas used to be like that years ago...and actually I remember when I moved here in 1998 that the zip code 89130 was a terrible side of town but it's really not like that anymore. Obviously there are some places that are less desirerable than others but I really don't think you are moving to that place.

I am so glad to hear that you have linked up with some of those groups. See I have a different outlook on Vegas and get the best of both worlds. My darling partner is a club developer and promoter and used to be the Entertainment Director for the Palms Casino. And yes, that world can be very sleasy. However, when we don't have to be on the strip....we don't go. We spend a lot of time in Red Rock, Valley of the Fire, Mt. Charleston, taking drives to Parump...just to take a drive....not because there is anything worth driving into Parump for.....taking drives to Boulder City. Basically exploring. I am a firm believer that you make it what you want it to be. Obviously you can't make it Washington but...you can find the beautiful aspects of the desert and attract the kinds of people you want to interact with. When we moved back here after a year absence because my husband got a job at the Experience Music Project in Seattle, I got involved in mom's groups and eventually became a doula. Now, I am neck deep in holistic, like minded people. It's a huge group. Just gotta know where to look. I grew up in Hawai'i and lived in Santa Monica, CA and Issaquah, WA. I certainly am not a desert rat but....it's where I am....it's where my kids have lived most of their lives....and it has always been good to us. So, like I said, people either love it or hate it and are usually always trying to leave.

Boulder City is great and really probably just up your alley. I have a few friends that live out there and they belong to the LVmom group (you can find it on yahoo) and have lots of homebirthing friends in Henderson as well. Hey, just stick with me kid...I'll get you all hooked up!
