So...adventures in diapersewing here! I am making my first dipe w/PUL. I thought I would do a hidden layer. Hemp jersey on the outside, pul and fleece closest to the baby...microfiber and fleece sewn in soaker. Anyway...the PUL is giving me fits...or maybe it's the hemp, although I have made a dipe out of the hemp before and I didn't have near the trouble. Some how, it's all crooked and the wing is too short. The PUL ends up being too small, I'm assuming the hemp and fleece are getting stretched as I'm sewing. Ugh...now I understand why peopel are willing to pay so much for dipes...what a PITA. Well, I take that back, I didn't have a problem making my first diaper that didn't have PUL. I think it's the PUL...ahhhh...PUL, I just had to have it and now I hate it!!!!!

Any suggestions. I thought I would try cutting a slightly bigger piece of PUL and seeing if that helped.

Pin! Try to keep them just inside the seam allowance, and pin the whole diaper together before you start sewing and that should save your sanity
Not to mention, if you tried just cutting a bigger piece of PUL, you'll end up with a diaper that is bigger than you wanted!

I'm wondering why you are using hemp jersey on the outside of a PUL layer-- you don't get the benefit of its absorbency! Usually when people put absorbant fabric (usually cotton prints) on the outside of PUL it's because of the cuteness factor...hmmm....maybe I've answered my own question -- you wanted the natural look of the hemp and you didn't want to hide it under a cover.
Nevermind.

Something I've done is cut the PUL out the size you want and then sew it to your other layers before cutting them. Then cut out around the PUL. That way, everything else can stretch as you sew and it won't affect the final diaper size.

I hear you on the frustration here though. My first experience was not pretty

Ohhhh! Good idea. I will try that. I think I'm going to just remove the PUL from this dipe and try again with the piece using your suggestion.
I was making fun of the instructions that came with my dipe pattern as to how to attach the elastic...and tried to improvise...bad idea, I had a crooked misshapen mess

Ahh...the joys of diaper sewing!

I have a walking foot. I just felt that I shouldn't need it since it was the hidden layer. What I ended up was pinning like crazy. I will wash and dry it on hot and hopefully it will be all good! Otherwise my vintage singer handled all the layers and the PUL beautifully!
