Hi, I'm currently nursing my 22 month old DD several times a day. I have a question for you experienced moms. Sorry if this is long.

Starting about 3 weeks ago, my right nipple started getting really sore. I have not had any soreness since she was about 3 months old. It was red and very tender...like normal soreness in the beginning. DD is teething pretty viciously, so I just figured it was that. After about a week or so, I developed in that nipple, what felt to me to be a plugged duct. It looked like a "vein" bulging up my areola and all the way to the tip of my nipple. The pain was blinding, and I was in tears nursing on that side. (Having a plugged duct a few times before deeper in my breast, I knew I had to at least let her nurse some). I started acidophilus just in case it was a yeasty thing, and did all the plugged duct rituals. Instead of doing like my plugged ducts usually do, it went away slowly...well, the "vein" went away. I now still have a moderately sore nipple (like sore inside) and a "lump" right on the edge of my areola. It's right under my skin, and it is visible to my DH after DD nurses on that side. The lump itself feels numby/tingly, but there is some pain in the breast itself. No sign of infection.

I'm starting to be concerned. I don't know if I could even mention EBF to my PCP doctor, and he is who I'd have to see because of my insurance. So here's my questions. Can a plugged duct last this long? Should I see my doctor? Anyone else had anything like this?

Thanks gals!

Yes, it is possible for a plugged duct to last this long, or it could be a subclinical infection. I'd get it checked out- your intuition is telling you something's "not right" here.

Maybe go to your PCP and ask for a referal to a breast specialist? Or would this be a GYN concern? (if your insurance even lets you go to your GYN rather than your PCP.)
