I have started buying organic fabrics and I don't want to screw them up.
Are procion dyes considered low-impact? I've looked at 'natural' dyes and some of the mordants are scary and the process seems pretty involved. But I see lots of stuff dyed with 'low impact dyes' that look like procion. If not, then what?

Help! TIA!

I will give a qualified "yes" to your assertion that what you are seeing referred to as "low-imact dyes" are Procion dyes, also referred to as fiber reactive dyes and MX dyes (a "you say toe-ma-toe, I say toe-may-toe" kinda thing)

The qualification is that I can speak for myself and other dyer's whose work I am familiar with, but it is probably safe to assume that others are doing the same.

THANK YOU KATHY!

I knew you would come by and give me the information I needed!

Can I ask more questions?

Procion dyes seem to come in different classes of dyes with different (not very, but still) safety profiles. Are they all still low-impact? And do you have any links with more information? I've tried to google but I haven't really found anything.

Karen

PS I like to call them Procion.
: Quicker to type than fiber reactive and MX makes me feel like a rock groupie or something.

Here is a link to Paula Burche's description of the various types of fiber reactive dyes. "Procion" is/was actually registered name to a company whose name escapes me, but this trademark has run out and the word seems to have gone the way of words like Xerox and Kleenex.

Anyways...as you will see onthe link there are many different types of FR dyes. The MX class dyes are the most versatile and easiest to use. They don't require steaming(though it doesn't hurt
) and have, I believe, the lowest cure temp. requirement.

Anyways...
