Hello. I'm new to TF, just started easing in a few weeks ago. Yesterday I put some flour/buttermilk to soak for the banana bread recipe in NT. Today when I took the towel off the bowl, there was a layer of dark brown/black something on top with some clear liquid. Is that normal? I soaked some flour last week for the bread recipe and it didn't do that.
Thanks.

Was your kitchen (or whatever room you're soaking in) much warmer than it was last week? I know that when the weather gets much hotter in the summer, I have to put soaking things in the basement, because the kitchen is so warm that things just rot instead of properly fermenting, and bread rises too fast, etc.

Thank you for responding. It's definitely been much warmer this week than last. I will try again tomorrow and put it in the basement. I'm slowly working my way through the learning curve of TF. I'm planning to order some kefir grains and yogurt culture next week...

Thanks.
