okay here goes -
my daughter broke her leg in june & had a cast on for 4 weeks. when it was removed, her eczema had gone crazy under the cast - it looked worse than it ever has. (she has very bad flare-ups periodically, esp. on her right ankle, backs of both knees and all over her calves & thighs)
the patch on her ankle was awful - yellow, scaly and smelled terrible. after about an hour, the scale had dried & flaked off, and she started scratching the raw patch underneath even more raw. it got so badly torn up that it became what the pediatrician called 'superinfected'. i had to topically apply bactroban ointment, and she was put on an oral antibiotic for a staph infection (!). it was wrapped for about 3 weeks in gauze so she couldn't scratch, until it scarred & healed.
fast forward to wednesday morning, this week. the eczema is in what i guess i'd call a 'dormant' phase right now - very minimal & under control. her ankle looks great, just the one big scar.
but she has a fever. no symptoms of anything, no cough, no runny nose (unless the fever spikes, then just a clear discharge), no complaints of head or body aches (although i'm sure she feels generally achy and blah).
however - she is on & off limping on the right foot, and complaining that her "owie hurts" - pointing to the scar.
i've seen no change or discoloration in her scar site, or her fracture site, and she's not complaining about the fracture site at all (her right tibia - just above the ankle).
as far as i can see, there isn't any sign of a recurrence of the infection. she finished the course of antibiotic a month ago...
what could this be???
is that spot just hyper-sensitive due to the old infection, and this mystery illness is just aggravating it? like people who get joint pain when the weather changes???
i'm stumped - any ideas mamas?

well, after 4 days, zöe hsa been fever free for over 24 hours (yay!)
and hasn't complained of any pain in her foot. we consulted with an orthopaedic nurse, who was of the opinion that due to the infection and the post-fracture trauma, her ankle was most likely just responding to the fever, and the antibodies her body was producing to fight off whatever was causing the fever. - that her general achiness was heightened in that area just because of the recent injuries.
since there was no swelling, discoloration, or heat produced in her scar tissue, she felt that there was no evidence to suggest an osteo infection. i mentioned to her something that i don't think i included in my original post, which was that the only time zöe limped or complained of pain, was when her fever spiked.
the nurse felt that was a reinforcement to her opinion about the whole thing.
i trust her opinion - she has been an r.n. for over 35 years, and specializes in osteopathy.
hopefully this is the last we see of this. it's been such a hard time for zöe, and the rest of us. i've been feeling hyper-concerned about every little thing with her since she broke her leg...
thanks so much for your concerns and advice, too mamas! it's so good to have such a caring group of people ready to share knowledge and experience when i need it!
