DS (12 months) throws an absolute fit during diaper changes. I know it's normal, I know that giving him a toy/object to focus on helps some. But it's making me crazy and I keep avoiding diaper changes and he's going longer and longer between them and that's just not good parenting/hygiene
I think doing a style of diaper I can get on while he's standing or sitting or leaning would help - that's what I manage to do when getting him dressed (picture a mama chasing her half-dressed 1y/o).
Anyway, he's fine standing up while I take off his pants and diaper (pf and cover), he happily sits on the potty and reads, and then all hell breaks loose while we try to get a new pf and cover on him.
I was hoping to wait until he was 30 lbs to get training pants of some sort because that's the lower limit for a lot of what I've seen, so it would last longer. So maybe there's something else I can do for the next 5-6lbs (he's about 24.5lbs now)? We don't really EC or potty learn yet - he goes on the potty at diaper changes and I plan to let him run around naked outside this summer so I can get a sense of his cues and when he generally pees (our house is almost all carpetted, so naked time in the house doesn't work well since he won't stay in one place). I wish I had known about EC when he was brand new...or at least immobile...
Anyway, I've seen prefold belts at the EC store (I'm cool letting him run around without a cover, or getting some inexpensive pull-on covers to go under pants), so that might be another option....though I'm still not sure I could get it on him standing up? I've seen a couple pull-on style diapers that also have snaps so I could get them off easily if they're poopy (we're getting better at catching poops on the potty, but he doesn't always really grunt or anything...), but again, the current size goes up to 35lbs (I have no idea if he'll be ready for underwear by then) and the next one starts at 30 (and DS is a runnin' 12m/o, so he's pretty slim and I don't think the 30lb ones would fit him well yet).
I guess I'm looking for recommendations of either other diapering products or some way to modify our use of our current stuff at a low cost....or some other tips on managing diaper changes. He's flailing and I feel like I'm in a wrestling match. I have a couple times literally had to use my leg to (sort of gently) pin him down so I could get a dang diaper on him. It's not cool, and not the way I want to treat my child.
If this should be on a different topic board, let me know. I could very well be barking up the wrong tree in terms of thinking a different diaper type would be all that helpful
Perhaps it's a behavior issue (on my part or his) that needs to be addressed, or perhaps I need to go ahead with a more potty learning type of approach. I don't know, but I can't keep feeling like I'm physically fighting my child every 2-4 hours....
Also, I'm a somewhat dry-humored/sarcastic/self-deprecating/goofy/cheesy poster. I'm probably not nearly as desperate or exasperated as I sound (well, maybe...). I am new-ish to MDC and keep getting comments with a tone I either don't understand or isn't fitting to my own. Please forgive! I'm actually very level-headed, just trying to find humor in these diaper changes. Potty humor, I suppose.
