I've been attending a mommy and movers group that our hospital puts on for 2 years now.

This week, the hospital just ran out of room to house us - so I offered to have all the moms and toddlers over to my house.

When they walked in, it was a chorus of "Look at all these wooden toys!" "Where did you find such a cute wooden kitchen?" "You don't have any plastic?!" "Look at all your beautiful decorations!"

All the kids had a wonderful time - they stayed for 2 hours. The moms chilled and just caught up.

I had to write down websites, craigslist tips, etc for finding all the toys we have in our home - along with passing along some information about safe baby toys, and Waldorf education. !

I forget that our home looks different than the average house with toddlers.

So glad everyone had a good time.
:

Do you ever discover that you go into sensory overload when you visit non-Waldorfy families that have small children? Whenver we go to our (all mainstream) friends' houses, I can't stand all the noisy toys, etc. Too many colors! Too many lights! I've discovered that we always come home and spend the afternoon *very* quietly after such playdates.

Yes. I think both the little one and I end up with sensory overload. (My husband too when he's been to other homes.)

Blinking, talking, flashing plastic toys - stuff everywhere, broken toys in the bottom of the toy box.

It ends up being too much. We love coming home to our house.

LOL...after attending several homes of children in the mainstream...I found it the perfect motivation to move over to a MORE Waldorf style! I have removed one or two un-natural toys and things every time...not that there is much to begin with! It also helped motivate me to keep the TV off all day. I can't believe how many toddlers have a "Show they watch"!

Yesssssss! TV on while the battery operated toys do their thing as the kids just sit there pushing the buttons over and over and over. My SIL's house is the worst (she also has a 4yo). When her son is at our house he jumps right into what we have and it's the only time I see his imagination at work. Sigh.
