My breast feels bruised on one side. There is no lump that I can feel and it does not feel hot to the touch. It is incredibly painful--so much that I cannot stand to hold DS on that side--but it does not hurt to nurse on that side. I went to kellymom, and looked up clogged ducts and mastitis, but it didn't sound like either of those. Help please, this hurts!!!

I'm sorry you are in so much pain! How long has it been going on? Is it constant? I sometimes get a bruised feeling w/o lump or redness and then it goes away the next day. Also, my MW told me that a deep clogged duct will not produce a lump you can feel. Can you massage it while you feed and see if it makes a difference. You may also want to try nursing from above, lay baby down on bed and just dangle the meal over him. This will ensure that all ducts are draining equally. Be careful if you have strong let-down (dd choked at first then loved the easy milk).

Also, what kink of bra are you wearing? An underwire could cause pain.

I hope you are feeling better!

I had pain like that a few weeks ago, there was no lump but it was a little bit pink and super sore! I used warm compresses right before nursing and it went away in a couple of days. It was tender for a day or two but nothing like it was in the beginning.

Sounds like clogged duct(s) to me. The suggestions above are good ones. You don't need to feel a lump or even heat to have a clogged duct. Once it starts getting hot, usually an infection is brewing (mastitis) so I suppose you could look at it as a good sign there is no heat. The compression, gentle massage, heat, will help get it flowing. Also try nursing the baby on that breast in a different position than usual, football hold if you've been doing cradle hold. The dangling sounds like a good trick too. Don't quit nursing on the side that hurts (I know you already know that). I had a clogged duct one time that I could have described as a bruise feeling on my breast. It did end up getting worse and I got mastitis so keep working on it. Sorry I don't have any new advice to add. It could be from the bra too, either the underwire causing the pain or the pressure of the bra causing the blockage. Sorry you are feeling so rotten, hope it gets better soon.

I've had the pain since Monday night and I don't wear underwire bras while nursing--just too uncomfortable for me! Last night I noticed that I have developed a little red spot about the size of a nickle, but the pain isn't as bad as it was in the beginning. I have been using warm washcloths and massaging it, but I haven't tried the dangling my breast above him--will try that today--great idea!! Thanks for all your help with this --never had clogged ducts with DD--it is so weird how everything is different with different children.
