I've had breastfeeding issues since the day my little girl was born (she's 10 weeks old now). She was tongue tied but it was 4 days until someone figured it out. My nipples were cracked, bleeding and a complete mess. We had her frenulum clipped which helped for a while but my nipples have been sore since day one (red and irritated). I have a feeling that she still isn't sucking properly. I do have an overactive let-down and I think she may have trouble keeping up with the flow (I can pump 4 ounces in less than 5 minutes) so she compensates by pinching my nipple and/or tongue thrusting. I've put up with the nipple soreness because it really isn't all that bad UNTIL this week. I thought for sure I was going to have to give up breastfeeding for good. My nipples hurt SO bad. Then today they felt better. The other thing that happened today is that I had horrible menstrual cramps. I'm wondering if maybe the extreme nipple pain is because of my approaching period. Has anyone else had this issue? I'm worried that I'm going to have to go through this once a month. I don't think I'll be able to handle it. I've just been waiting for her to be able to handle the milk flow better but I'm worried when this will happen and if things will correct themselves before I have this nipple pain again.

That happens to me. Taking evening primrose oil every single day makes a difference. It sounds like you really also need some help to address the overactive letdown and latch, though. There are some wonderful sources of information on www.kellymom.com, and it might be time to hire an LC.
