I am 8 weeks pregnant with my third child and have terrible all-day sickness. I am not actually vomiting, I just want to after I actually eat. I avoid all my normal foods like beans and nuts, I can't stand the thought of them especially peanut butter. I am not a strict vegan/vegaterian, but I do not do dairy. I normally do eat eggs, but not now. There have been a few times I have had meat since I got pregnant, but it made me feel terribly sick afterward.
Anyway, I normally avoid soy. I hate soy milk, plus the concerns of estrogen bother me, especially since I am pregnant. However, I was already thin and have now lost 5 lbs since I got pregnant. I was wondering about supplementing with soy protein shakes or bars. I think I could get them down. Which are the best taste and nutrition-wise?
I do not do dairy, so no whey. I have been looking into spirutein shakes they are not completely soy and some of it is fermented which is supposed to be better. How do they taste with rice or almond milk? Which flavor is best?
Should I really even be worried about soy?
Thanks

I consulted a nutritionist/register dietician when writing my pregnancy cookbook and she said there were no special concerns about soy during pregnancy. I do recommend staying away from large amounts of soy protein isolates however and I think many soy protein powder are made from them. How about smoothies with tofu and flax seed oil instead? Also I have heard hemp protein powders recommended.

Here's a good smoothie you might like:

Meal Shake
This smoothie is a powerhouse of protein, vitamins, and minerals.

2 tablespoons raw almonds or cashews
1 tablespoon raw sunflower or pumpkin seeds
1 cup milk (dairy or nondairy) or kefir
1/4 cup juice (apple, pineapple, etc.)
1 banana, fresh or frozen
1 cup fresh or frozen berries (strawberries, blueberries, etc.)
1 tablespoon wheat germ
2 teaspoons nutritional yeast flakes
1 teaspoon flaxseed or hempseed oil
1/4 teaspoon spirulina powder (optional)

Place nuts and seeds in blender and grind to powder. Add remaining ingredients and puree until smooth.

Makes 2 servings

How about trying hemp protein shakes? I think that hemp protein would also have more fat in it, so that would help you as well. You could try them with some hemp milk (I would recommend the vanilla, the plain has agreed with me taste wise since I am pg). I may have to look making some of these for myself as well as I am losing weight this pregnancy. BUT, I definitely had some to lose so it isn't a big deal yet. My problem is a very limited diet because of a food allergic nursling.

I lived on Spirutein shakes after my wisdom teeth were removed. I also chose it because it's only got some soy protein and the rest is from peas and rice. I made them each morning with almond milk but you could use rice, hemp, oat, etc. if you wanted, and a banana. I liked the chocolate best. I often added some soy yogurt which is cultured, but you can leave that out if you like.
