Hi all -

DS recently turned 1, so we're starting to introduce milk. Since he's been on soy formula - long story - (and dairy cheese does a number on his tummy!), we're starting out with soy milk. I've noticed that there are several varieties by each brand, including original and unsweetened. The nutrition profile of original seems to more closely match whole milk. But, that's achieved with a bunch of cane juice, etc...

I'm inclined to go with unsweetened, but I'm wondering if babies need the carbs from milk in much the same way that they need the extra fat from whole milk (as opposed to low or non-fat).

I don't drink milk or soy milk, so I don't have a lot of experience here...

Any thoughts?

What about using coconut milk (diluted with water)? It's very good for their bodies and developing brain, and you can get it just the right consistency depending on how much water you add - typically I dilute mine (to make smoothies and the such) 1:1. You can get whole organic coconut milk at most stores (you would want the whole-fat kind not the low-fat kind if you were interested in using it). Just a thought ...

duh... i was just looking for some milky thing that i could offer to ds that wasn't soy milk or cow's milk (we don't do uncultured dairy) or store-bought almond milk (which is surprisingly not just almonds). i never thought about coconut milk for him!
