There is a free publication in my area called Wilmington Parent. It's a newspaper-like magazine and website that gives info about family-friendly events, activities and info. It talks about area preschools, etc. Anyway, I was just on the website to see what free or cheap activities I might be interested in and noticed this link to the cover story. Apparently they're featuring a local mom who is also working for an area radio station. I guess she must be giving parenting advice as part of her gig.

Here is a link to the lovely advice given about weaning a 13-month-old baby.

http://www.wilmingtonparent.com/airtime.html

Quote:

Michelle needs help with weaning her 13 mo. Old daughter, who’s on solid foods and finally down to just nursing at night… “When I give her soy or cow’s milk, she just throws a fit to the point of hyperventilation.”

Christy Eakins, PAC at Cape Fear Pediatrics says it sounds like a “child controlling mom” issue, especially with the hyperventilating. Just totally stop nursing. Let the child cry. She will eventually realize that she isn’t getting the breast anymore and resort to the soy or cow’s milk. Consistency is the key.

FWIW, this is also apparently the radio station whose morning DJs were making disparaging remarks about NIP after a local mom held a nurse-in in front of a doc's office after being told not to bf in the waiting room. I don't listen to the radio station, so I didn't personally hear those remarks.

Maybe we should all send emails to the link at the bottom of the page. I need to calm down before I do mine, though.

edited to fix the link (I hope)

What a sadistic psychopath. Yeah, just ignore your children's emotional well-being completely and I'm sure they'll turn out just fine:

Sadly enough, the PCA whose comments I put in the quote is only one of several of people giving similar advice. It's sad that the woman who runs the advice column only published advice advocating harsh weaning methods. Can't wait to see future advice she gives.
