I saw this in the "what names wouldn't you use" thread. My question is: how come? The only thing I can think of is Max Demian in the Herman Hesse book, but how many people will really get that?

Yeah, it's The Omen thing. It's a shame that such a nice name has been spoiled by a movie. There are a few names that I like but would never use because of how they've been used in books, movies, and songs: Damian, Scarlett, Jemima, Lola, Lolita, and Cecilia to name a few.

I think the Damien link is largely a generational sort of thing. Most folks who didn't have a foot in the 70s don't have as much of a stigma attached to the name. Bit from Wikipedia:

The name "Damien" sounds vaguely like the English "demon," but is not at all etymologically related[1]. It is interesting that since the original Omen movie came out, Damien has become a name with powerful evil connotations, despite the fact that historically it is associated with many saintly figures. Damien is the French form of the English name Damian (Latin Damianus), popular as the name of a martyred Christian saint of the third century (see Saints Cosmas and Damian). Another prominent Damien was Father Damien of Hawaii, who died while establishing leper colonies there. Damien is also the first name of Father Karras in The Exorcist.

I like the name Damian too. There was a kid in my class, or the year down maybe, named Damian and he didn't get too much grief about the name. This was in high school, in the late 80s, when The Omen and its sequels were really popular. IMO it would be fine to use the name these days.

My little brother's name is Damian. He was named after the aforementioned Fr. Damien of Molokai who did wonderful things for leper colony on Molokai. I love the name, but after the Omen it did twist it for me. CREEPY movie. *shudders*

Damian is one of the best loved of all the Saints. That was the irony of the "Omen" using that for the name of the son of satan.

so now, the avg joe associates Damian w/ the devil because of the movie which is such a crock if you read about St. Damian.

I have a cousin named Damian (50yo) & I would name a boy Damian no problem.

both times I was pg, Damian was in the top 3 names

It's the association with Satan/devil or evilness that eeks people out I think.

I think it's a cool name. I went to school with a Damien.
