I was reading the other thread on weight loss and BFing, and it got me wondering about exercising. Is it good or bad to say, go for a jog when you're BFing? I've read lots of things about how Mamas need to be relaxed and take it easy during the time they're BFing, but I can't imagine no exercise for over a year...

Personally I feel generally tired and depressed when I don't at least go for a walk a few times a week, and I haven't been doing so because I didn't want to mess up the milk flow.

So what's the rule?

You can exercise while bfing. The general rule is to keep weight loss to no more than one pound per week (because of toxins in the milk). As long as you're not loosing too much weight, jog all you want!

I have a friend who EBF for 18mos or more, and worked (so a lot of that was pumping which can also hurt supply) and she continued to teach tons of exercise classes each week.

eta- she didn't use anything to boost her supply either...

Definately exercise! You need to take care of yourself...your baby will thank you. Since my baby was 3 weeks old (she's 4 months now) I've been running 2-3 miles at least 4x a week and lifting weights. I've never had a supply problem, plenty of milk here. Get back into things slowly and stay hydrated. Good luck, mama!

Thats more about decreasing your caloric intake than getting exercise. You do still need to eat the additional calories for a BF mom but exercising in small amounts is fine.

The only thing I would generally say is wait until the baby is two months old to recover from childbirth, but your baby is older than that.

Exercising is great for everyone! Definitely you need to give yourself a chance to recover from birth but once you've done that, no reason why you can't do the exercising of your choice.

Unfortunately exercise doesn't help me a stitch with losing weight, because it just makes me way more hungry than I was before... but exercise is still really good for you!

I EBF, WOH full-time (so I pump during the week) and I train for triathlons (I've done two this summer with another coming up in a couple of weeks.) I have had ZERO supply issues.

I have also lost almost all of my pregnancy weight through diet and training. My DD is just over 5 months old and is thriving (in fact, she just started going from laying to sitting - alone - just this morning!)

Producing breastmilk is a priority for mom's body.
