Spokane Nurse-in/casual lunch

There is a yahoo group in Spokane that is organizing a Lunch/nurse-in to be held at the Olive Garden in downtown Spokane. It's tentativly schedualed for Wed 6-29, at 1pm. It's a non-militant type of gathering. t-shirts advocating the benefits of Breastfeeding are great, signs and chants are not. If anyone is interested, I'll post the whole story later. I'm NAK right now.

Just curious as to why you are planning this?

Has Olive Garden made it clear they have problems with breastfeeding in their business? Has a mom or employee been told she cannot do this on their property?

An entire group of women breastfeeding on purpose in a public forum does sound militant, especially if they are wearing advocacy t-shirts!

Before anyone knee-jerk reacts to what I am saying, I breastfed ds until he was 4 1/2 years old, wherever, whenever it was needed. I am NOT anti-breastfeeding, obviously! Indeed, I praise any woman I see nursing in public. Not because she is nursing in public, but just because she is nursing!

Anyway, I feel this kind of in-your-face group action can have a negative affect on the public (IF it is being done for no reason, ie: it is not in reaction to anyone being told they cannot breastfeed somewhere).

Just my opinion.....

Sounds awesome!! Have a good time

There's nothing militant or in your face about a bunch of moms wearing t-shirts having lunch at Olive Garden and nursing their babes.

I am a part of a natural parenting support group in Spokane. One of our members was told by a server to stop breastfeeding in the Olive Garden. The woman and her brother (who also works at the Olive Garden) firmly explained the law and the mother's rights. Many of us have decided to have lunch there, and if we happen to nurse while we are eating lunch....... It is not a militant action, nor is it "in your face". That is why I mentioned the "no signs or chants" bit. The woman's brother does still work there.

I only posted it here because there are a few Moms in Spokane who have gotten together in the past, and I thought it might be a good excuse to get together and have lunch. If some of us are weranig pro breastfeeding t-shirts, it's a subdued form of education, and not in your face at all. Unless I stick my chest in your face, then that's a different type of militant action. :LOL

Hi Leetah! I'm just curious, I heard from a friend of a friend... that she was not told directly not to nurse there, but something like an employee commented to another employee that she shouldn't...? Just trying to understand what happened, would love to see you all for lunch though

She said that the server said that it was gross that she was nursing in public and when he was told that she had the right to nurse anywhere that she herself was allowed to be he said "whatever, I don't want to see that, she should have to go out of the Olive Garden to nurse". She did not specify if he said it directly to her or to her brother. (Their mom is the group facilitator and a local midwife) We do not want her brother to be ostracized, that's why it's just a casual lunch. (all you can eat soup, salad and breadsticks!!!)

She needs a head count by Mon the 27th, I believe, for the reservation. I'd be great to see you there.

We are going. I'm just brining Vi.
I think educating people in a gentle, fun way like a luncheon is definately the way to go. I don't think it matters if the comment was directed to the mom or not, it's all about the education. I'm not sure why anyone thought we were just doing this out of the blue...of course there is a reason, and hey, we'll don't need much excuse to have a mama get together.

Oooh, I actually have my own car now! I will try to come too. i don't have a nursling...or a shirt, but I haven't seen any of you in sooo long!
Is posting here enough to say that we're coming? Also, what time will it be? I'll bring my one lonesome advocacy tee and nursing babe although there's no guarantee of course that she'll nurse right then with all the excitement...
Sure, I'll let Melissa(the organizer) know you plan on coming. It will be 1:00. Can't wait to see you guys again! You won't belive how big Violet is!

Brianna, do you think you will know for sure soon? I know she needed to know by monday so she can make the reservations, and I won't be here to let her know to add you on. Well I will just tell her to plan on it, and if you can't make it we'll just have more elbow room. lol I didn't know Tucker weaned! Wow, what a big boy!

Darnit, I really want to come (mostly because you all are just fun) but ds is *horrible* in restaurants nowadays and we're trying to be frugal because we're going to Seattle in a week and a half.
