Any one know of a non religious, reputable groups that I could sponsor a child with??
I've wanted to for so long, and we are financially able to now, but I want to find one that is 'good' and not keeping all the money for themselves...
Thanks...

We sponsor a child through http://ahopeforchildren.org/. This is an Ethiopian orphanage for HIV+ children and the donations pay for their medication. We receive progress reports every 3-4 months. I think their overhead is only 2%.
I felt moved to do this after reading There Is No Me Without You, a book by Melissa Fay Greene that examines the orphan crisis in Africa and mentions some of Ahope's work.
One thing- we do not send cards or letters directly to the child since newer guidelines are making it possible for these children to be adopted (i n the US and elsewhere). The program doesn't want to confuse the children with the distinction between sponsor and potential adoptive parent.

I highly recommend PlanUSA. http://www.planusa.org/

They do the traditional letter-writing thing, but the bulk of their money goes to improve international communities that are suffering. They send financial statements so you can see where your $$ goes and give news updates how their help has bettered the area you're helping to sponsor, but they don't send frills like calendars and tons of junk mail. DH sponsors a child in Ecuador and I sponsor one in El Salvador. It's a great program.

Angel Covers is a wonderful organization that helps children living in extreme poverty in several countries. They are completely run by volunteers and 100% of your sponsorship fee goes to your child. It is a secular organization - there is no religious agenda. Since I am not religious, this was an important consideration for me.
We have sponsored three children in Nairobi through Angel Covers for the past year and it's been a very rewarding experience for our family.

Please check out SOS Children's Villages. I'm in a rush or I'd post more, but suffice to say I researched EVERY sponsoring charity and they are the most ethical for many reasons. PM me for more info if you want--I don't want to accidentally impugn someone's favorite charity and turn this thread into yelling match like the Locks of Love thread.

We sponsor a child (through a religious org) and love it! Just wanted to post and say do your research. Even if someone suggest an org. check it out for yourself. You'll find the perfect place
