Sport Wash

It seems like not long ago I was raving about Sport Wash getting rid of my smelly fleece problems and keeping my hemp stink free... well, it gave Stella a burn type rash on her thighs and labia. Poor baby.

It started on her thigh and I thought it might be chaffing because her thighs are 11" and chubbalicious. So, I switched to prefolds and soakers for a few days and it kept getting worse. It looked like she had a chemical burn.
We were in Chicago for the past 4 days and while I was there I washed her dipes in the IL's Tide... within a day the rash was 30% better. I came home and rewashed all of her stuff in 7th Gen and she is about 50% better.

S0, the moral of my story is that I think her urine reacted with the Sport Wash and burned her poor baby skin.

I'll probably feel comfortable using it for the occasional strip wash but not more than once or twice every few months. The search for the perfect detergent continues...

aww poor Stella!!!
I was just thinking last night how much detergents and the search for the pefect wash routine rules our lives!

Good to know though, I use it occassionally-but to me (I'm sensitive to odors) it has a funny/fishy smell when I put it in the cap. And that bothers me.
I'm weird.

I have heard of others having a rash from Sports Wash. When I switched from Tide to Sportswash last year I actually ended up with repelling fleece.Went back to Tide and all was fine after that.So yeah I do not think Sportswash is so great. And of course I have two huge bottles of it

Oh poor baby! I just started using it and have only used it a couple of times. Seems like it is a neverending search huh?!
poor Stella!

I didn't even think about it until your post but I bought a bottle a month ago or so and the boys had a leathery type of rash and I just thought maybe it was because I bought Arm& Hammer instead of Tide. Maybe it was the sport wash.

Yep, as this rash heals it looks leathery.

Part of my problem is that I don't want to have to use a mainstream brand detergent but I fear repelling fleece with a natural brand. We use 7th Gen on our clothes and now I am using it on the dipes too... but I fear repelling fleece. I cannot stand having to buy 2 types of detergent, it's so pricey!

Yeah, that would bum me out too. I hope she's okay...there's nothing worse than acid burn!! I'm very sorry this happened...but the up side is at least you figured it out. It probably would have taken longer to pin point if you had not been in Chicago.

Sometimes I get exhausted thinking about how preoccupied I am with washing diapers...it's always in the back of my head. What's wrong, why that smell...something staining, hemp stink, stiff hemp, repelling fuzzi bunz....

OMG... it is exhausting!!!

Okay, call me crazy, but I like dish washing detergent. I got the idea from another mama here, and it really works. I use the brand that comes in the weird shaped bottles in Target. I like the lavendar scent. It's a natural detergent, too, and it really works well on my dipes, and it just takes a little squirt for each load.

Just my input...
What about Simple Green? Has anyone tried that?

Is it the method brand? We use that on our dishes. and smells great!!
Poor Stella

We had the same experiance with sportwash. I washed all of the diapers/trainers in it then we went camping. It was one of the worse trips we have taken. DS wore the trainers at night time only, by morning his penis was swollen and he was complaining that it hurt to pee and dd had blisters after a couple of hours in a diaper.
The weird thing was my kids have never been sensitive to detergents up until we used the sportwash. Like Jamie it also caused my fleece to repel and I only used it 1 time on all the diapers. I used 1/2 capful and it literally took 8 full washes to get it all out. This included washing with oxy clean, dish soap, hand scrubbing, and washing on super hot.
After my kids broke out I noticed the diapers had a "metalic" sort of smell to them. It was the detergent.
I posted about it here and found 2 other people who had the same reaction. Since at the time I was retailing the stuff I called the company and spoke with one of the head guys there. He had no idea what I was talking about and was sure it wasn't their detergent since it "rinses clean"
I'm sorry but my Tide that I have used forever rinses a heck of a lot cleaner in my super hot water than the sportwash did.

Sheena I would give those diapers a bunch more washes before putting them back on Stella. For those of us who have the same reaction it is really nasty.

I'm not certain, but my DH's liberal use of simple green on poo diapers seems to be possibly linked to holes starting to form in some of my diapers. I do know for a fact that it will strip the waterproofing from nylon and possibly ???? PUL

as for sport wash alternatives SHAKLEE BASIC H!!!!!!!
I use about an 1/8 cup with about 1/8 cup of detergent with routine diaper laundry and would suggest trying about a 1/4 cup (maybe 1/3) w/o detergent just to do a strip wash. look for local distributor to save on shipping

If you aren't using pockets calgon might be a good thing to try also.

Ugh, I'm VERY new to CD'ing & am trying mostly at night (don't ask, it seemed like the easier thing to do at first!). After her 1st night of HH pee everywhere (only used 1 stuffin!) and 2nd attempt at HH with 2 stuffins (she REFUSED TO WEAR IT!!!), she slept beautifully in a crickett's hemp fitted with a stacinator fleece over. In the gazillion pre-wear washes, i used sportwash in at least one wash & she had a rash the next day! the usual places, plus on her thighs!
: last night was a night off, tonight is a FF sleeptight but same wash- if she's got a rash, i'm back to walmart to at least unload the 2nd bottle i bought (it's not close by so i stocked up!).

the good news is i stripped our towels with it & it worked very well, so i'll be using the 1 bottle for a few years

Thanks so much for the post - i would've thought it was the hemp!

Ugh. I hope we don't have this issue. I just bought a bunch of it at Walmart - can never find it so I stocked up. Ava is so rashy but so far we haven't noticed a rash but I've only done 2 or 3 washes with it so it's hard to know yet.

For whoever asked, we used Allen's naturally for a while. I liked it a lot but we ran out so I thought I would try sports wash since I have to mail-order the allens.

Poor baby Stella. I'm glad to hear she is doing better. Sportswash can be tricky stuff. While I do think it has its place, it is definately not for everyone. I noticed a little Sportswash goes a long way - almost too far, more than a teaspoon and I'd have suds everywhere. I used to use it, but hated having to go to Walmart to buy it, so I switched to a different detergent.
