Sposie breathability

Disposable diapers that advertise themselves to be ‘breathable” and cloth-like – brands that I have seen do this are Fitti (not sure where they’re made) and Huggies, I don’t know if Pampers does. But are they really? It appears to me from close inspection of the product that there’s no plastic in them, it’s paper (apart from the absorbent gel stuff). The packaging gives no clue as to what the outers are made of. Can paper stuff be breathable and yet waterproof? Does anyone have more info or knowledge about this? I’m just really curious about the breathable claim.

I *think* they say that because of the multiple layers of that mesh material inside. to the eye.. it could look "breathable" BUT what is deceiving is that there is an icky gel inbetween that and the outer NON-breathable layer. Ever notice how an unused sposie "looks" fluffy inside. Then once pee'd in... it's soggy and grody? (not to mention all the chemical gel balls on babys bottom
)

Sorry for the rant :LOL my son comes home in a sposie everytime he comes home from his dads and I HATE it

Ok I found an old Huggies diaper we had and I took it apart....

When I tore off the mesh and the gel layers, I was able to really see/feel the outer/inner layer and when I pulled on it (till it broke) I could tell it had some sort of plasticy material in it. It almost looks like PUL does when stretched (but PUL is stronger and will not break, unless it's cut into a tiny piece first then pulled).

That's interesting they don't specify the outer material content... I wonder why
(It would go against their whole campaign about how the diaper is "breathable")

ETA: we had to switch to cloth (at 7 months) because sposie were not breathable! Hunter had an all over rash from them (everywhere the sposie touched him) and has a small rash that we fight every time he gets home from his dads

NOW... he is unable to wear anything PUL related as well. My conclusion (based on my babys bottom) is that PUL and sposies are NOT breathable

That 'cloth like cover' and 'stay dry liner' are usually
polypropylene <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polypropylene>
a 'petrochemical' or petroleum derivative. It is non-recyclable and
toxic when incinerated. Apart from that, its a pretty cool polymer

The 'cloth like cover' is still plastic - the soft outer is bonded to
a plastic inner. <http://www.gpoabs.com.mx/cricher/FAQ.htm#doyouknow>
'Breathable cover' is technically true, but the breathability is so
minimal as to be of no benefit - typically less than 3% of total
weight evaporated in 24 hours. The use of the term 'breathable cover'
is really just a marketing gimmick

as far as heat retention, siobhan is typically not hot in her huggies but MUCH hotter in her target or BRU specials. argh. she's in sposies 2x a week at work with DH (poop disposal at work is not something he's ready to deal with
: i went out & bought the target & BRU b/c they're cheaper, we're using SO many less
and she was starting to get plumber's crack in the huggies as she FINALLY started to slim down. but, hot hot hot in the cheaper ones! so, now she's in the cheaper ones at work with dh in the central air & i'm trying to remind him to put on a huggies to come home. next mission is put a cloth on to come home

My sons bum is always super sweaty when I put him in a sposie. Actually, he gets a sweaty bum in almost everything I put him in EXCEPT for VK AIO's. I don't know what she does differently but whatever it is, it WORKS! Now, If I could get about 10 more VK AIO's, I'd be happy. rofl.

Hmm good idea ChrisB... I'm gonna tear apart one of our Huggies now to look at it closely... don't know why I didn't think of it before!!

It really helps to look at it yourself!

Take a disposable and put your mouth on the inside of one of the legs, then put your hand on the outside of the leg and blow into it and see if air comes out the other side.. that's the definition of breathable in my book. I couldn't get air to come out of a pampers or a 2mil PUL AIO but I got tons of air to come through fitteds and even a fitted inside a wool cover (hand on outside of wool cover). Give it a try and tell me what you find.
