A day late, sorry!

Welcome to this week's Spotlight, tolovemercy!

Here's how we do this: Anyone who wants to, will pitch in a question for you (you being tolovemercy this week). Pretty much nothing is off limits, although of course you only have to answer the questions you want to. Also, if you wants to pitch in any words of wisdom, interesting information, anything goes-- it's your thread.

So, I'll start us off:

How are you feeling at this point?

Do you have any ideas of the gender? Are you planning to find out before the birth?

What are you thinking of for a birth plan?

Anyone else who has questions, feel free to post them!

If you're new to the DDC and want to sign up for your own Spotlight thread, here's the link: http://www.mothering.com/discussions....php?t=1182330

Aw, fun. Thanks, Kelly. I remember when we signed up for this, and May seemed like a bazillion years away.

How are you feeling at this point?

Pretty OK. The last few days have been really hot, and it's making me feel gross and fat and crabby. I've never been this pregnant in the summer before, so coping with that is uncharted territory for me.

Do you have any ideas of the gender? We're not finding out, but I'm thinking we're having another boy. I have absolutely zero girl feelings about this baby, whatsoever. I did with my boys, though, so what does that say? I'm enjoying the surprise more than I expected to.

What are you thinking of for a birth plan?

We're planning another kickass birth at home! My first was a midwife-assisted birth in the hospital, my second was a doctor-assisted home birth, and this time around I'm aiming for the best of two worlds: a midwife-assisted home birth. I labored in the water with both of my boys, but didn't deliver there. I'd like to, though. We'll have to see.

1. What's your favorite book and/or movie?

I am, admittedly, not much of a reader post-DS1. I find it frustrating to engage in a book and be interrupted 5,000 times, lol, which is why I've spent the last three years reading almost exclusively cooking magazines and nutrition/health articles.

I did, however, recently re-read C.S. Lewis' This Hideous Strength, loved it, and still rank the Space Trilogy pretty high up on my list.

As for movies...oh...I can't think of a favorite. I'm still too hung up on the LOST finale to think about anything else anyway.

Not very creative here. I'd go to Ireland. Because it's pretty. And because I'm Irish.

3. What's been the best thing about your pregnancy so far? The worst?

Best thing- I feel infinitely more aware of how much I'll love this baby, more confident in my mothering abilities, more aware of how temporary all of it is. It's been really therapeutic, actually. My pregnancy with DS2 came pretty quickly after DS1's birth, and while I am so glad for their age distance NOW, it did leave me with a lot of guilt and worry that I had made a terrible mistake when it was happening.

Worst thing- I'm way worn out. I work early morning hours at a bagel/coffee shop, then come home in time for DH to go to work, and spend the full day with the kids. It's really ideal hours insofar as I get to bring in some extra, much-needed $ and still be a SAHM...but yeah, 4am is an earlier start than I'm used to and makes for a long day for a big fat pregnant girl.

LOVE LOVE LOVE those books. But I think I remembered that you had read them too, you were like the only other person who liked the name Ransom for the baby

Erin, you are so amazing to get up for those early wake-up calls and go all day with your kids. I can barely make it out of bed in time for regular 9-5 job and I don't have anyone to take care of but me!

I initially ran across MDC right after DS1 was born, mostly because I wanted support for my desire to EBF, co-sleep and not/selectively vax. Since then, I've branched over to the nutrition boards, the allergy forum (though mostly lurking there), and the Traditional foods forum.

Ah...well, I would like to sit back, babymoon in a comfy chair with a glass of red wine while my boys happily play with one another, painting pictures and building blocks and not fighting. Hm...

Realistically, though, I'm just rolling with the punches.

Actually, I'd go to culinary school. I hated cooking until I got married, and now I love it.

I like to paint, actually. I'm working on an icon of the nursing mother of God (similar to this pattern), which I started during my last pregnancy. Hopefully I'll have it finished by the time the next nursling gets here.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about being a mom and/or pregnancy before you went through it?

Oh, gosh. Well, I'm the oldest of seven. The last four were all born when I was in jr. high and high school. I think I was adequately prepared for the physical demands of having kids, but no one ever told me how emotionally invested I would be-- how much worry and stress and guilt and gladness come with the whole thing--or how powerful those emotions are. I wish someone had warned me, yes, but I'm not sure there'd have been any way to prepare for it even if they had.

What's your #1 summer-coping strategy as a pregnant lady so far?

Hm. Well, the first really, really hot day here was on Monday. As I stated to DH that morning:

Let's just be clear. Neither of us have any delusions that I'm not going to use the air conditioning on full blast all day today, right?

So, that's about the level of my coping skills. Other than that, I'm just trying to drink alot of water to keep the puffiness to a minimum. My ankles are huge right now.

Why'd you choose to get out of the water in your previous two births?

What are your thoughts/feelings on the last episode?

I really need to watch it again! DH and I are planning to watch the whole series over the summer. On a purely emotional level, the final episode was really, really satisfying. Beyond that, I haven't put all the pieces together. How about you?

What are your favorite sources for recipes and cooking knowledge?

For day to day cooking, I really like Everyday Food, the magazine and the site.

Why'd you choose to get out of the water in your previous two births?

I was stuck in transition with both of them for a loooong time. When I finally started getting the urge to push, I also had the urge to stand up. I also didn't have an ideal birthing pool--just a bathtub, which limited my ability to move the way I needed to IN the water.

If you get a chance, the episode recaps at ew.com (by Doc Jensen) are FANTASTIC. They really helped me think about some of the episodes in a new way, and he uses a lot of quotes from the writers/producers so that we get a sense of what they were thinking. Love it.

Funny that you and your dh are going to watch it again...dh and I were thinking the same thing, once baby arrives!
