At my baby shower I was telling a friend of mine about how cloth diapers have come a long way, how you can buy things like FuzziBunz or fitted diapers with snap covers.

I told her that the FB's are about $15 new, and she started calculating how even at that price it might be a better deal than disposables. I told her that of course you can buy diapers used and bring the price down considerably, and she made a face and said, "Yuck."

Now, this friend is pretty open-minded usually, but she doesn't have any kids of her own. I don't either (yet) but I've been a stepmom and nanny for ten years, so I know that kids puke, drool, spit-up, pee and poop on everything -- their clothes, my clothes, the couch, etc.

I am so not phased by cloth diapers other kids have used but have been washed in hot water! I mean, does she think if you get a diaper service (which she thinks is a good idea) that they give you new diapers every time?

Just thought this was funny!

My DH is totally freaky weird about used diapers. I have to sneak the used ones by him as they come in the mail. He's completely opposed to buying anything like that used. He won't even buy a onesie used because he's afraid that the baby might have had a diaper blow out and it may have leaked on the onesie. :LOL

We have some used diapers in this house. What he doesn't know can't hurt him, right?

unless they are stinky! :LOL this is my main problem with buying used dipes..that and sometimes I've bought stuff that said EC or GC that were clearly NOT!

I bought a used dipe recently off the TP and washed it with ds dipes and they made ALL of the dipes stink! it took me like 6 more washes to get the smell out!

yeah, um seems as though it would be the same as a diaper service to me!

What *I* would have a problem with, same as buying used clothes, is STAINS. I would NOT want some other kid's STAINED dipes. EWWW! (maybe that sounds stupid if it's been in a hot wash and everything, but I just think it's yucky.....goes the same for even saving clothes and things stained by MY OWN CHILD for a second kid--first off, I bought SO MUCH STUFF that there'll be enough without it, and if I do happen to need more onesies or whatever, I'll do the same thing I did with DS and buy them for 10 cents or a quarter off a YARD SALE!!
) It just grossed me out that people advertise stained prefolds on ebay!! I don't care if I COULD buy them a dollar a dozen, I do NOT want some other baby's poop stain on my kid's butt!

*maybe* if we're talking about a REALLY CUTE fitted that I spent quite a bit on new for Z, I'd keep it stains and all for a second one.......as long as it was stains nobody else would see.

You *could* sun them out, and then you'd not have stains.

Dipes get stained and some mamas don't bother to sun them before selling. I've definitely gotten great deals on stained dipes, and then sunned them for a day and poof! Nice, stain-free dipes!

My poor little
boy:'s bum would be nearly naked without used dipes!

I often get a cold reception when I tell people I buy them used. They are like "Oh..."
: but everything I've bought used from the TP has been in as-described condition, usually very good to excellent!

I guess I've been lucky, but I also trust the mamas here!

Well, I am one of those who cannot buy used dipes. I try. Really, I do. But I keep thinking that I could not ever wear used underwear so I cannot put used dipes on my kids. Covers, I am okay with. LOL

I know its silly but I am a silly person I guess.

I once got in a HUGE fight with someone on a mainstream board about this. It had never occurred to me that it was a big deal. This woman went on and on about how much she loves (I swear) plastic and would only use plastic diapers and plastic bibs and plastic bottles (ew) and how "disgusting" I was. LOL! I went on to get kicked off the board over my homebirth views, lol. No loss there.

I can understand why it seems weird to people but when mainstreamers find out we cd they always assume it's a diaper service. Um, those ARE used, lol. And what's worse, they are probably bleached.

Almost all of my dipes are used. All of my covers are do sure!

To be honest, the idea kind of creeped me out before I realized how much money I could save. I also now try to by as much as I can used. I feel it hepls the environment even more.

I have no problem buying used. Some amazing diapers are only available used (like MammaMades
). I have gotten to try out almost all of the diapers I have wanted by finding them on the tp. Stains don't even really bother me because I know I can sun them.

A friend of mine once tried taking her ds's old dipes to a children's clothing consignment store. The owner wrinkled her nose and wouldn't take them, "A child has peed in those!" Friend asked for directions to the section with toddler clothes that haven't been peed in.

(lady never did accept the dipes)
